Kindergarten Round Up will be held at 9:00 am, April 11, 2011in our school Cafetorium. Please pass the word to anyone living in ourattendance area that Klein ISD will offer all-day Kindergarten classes for the 2011-2012 school year to any child who will be five (K) on or before September 1, 2011.Please contact the front office, 832-484-5884, with questions regarding enrollment requirements.
A certified birth certificate and complete immunization record, signed by the doctor, and proof of residence within the Theiss attendance zone are needed at the time of registration. If possible, please bring your child’s social security number with you to Kindergarten/Pre-Kindergarten Round Up.
Field Day
Friday is our annual Theiss Field Day. Come and join the fun by spending the day with your child. Our fabulous coaches still need some volunteers so your assistance would be appreciated!
CLINIC NEWS The district will be holding a training day for individuals interested in being certified for vision/hearing screenings, which will enable you to volunteer at schools with the vision /hearing screenings. The training will take place in the fall of 2011. If you are interested in the certification, contact Debra Baylor at 832-484-5886.
Medications: Please do not send medications in baggies. Pills must be in their original container to be given on the school campus. Do not send medications with your child. They must be brought to the clinic by a responsible adult.
ANNUAL PUBLIC CIDC MEETING Theiss Elementary will hold its annual Public CIDC meeting at 7:30 am in the library on April72011.All interested in learning more about the goals and developments of our school are welcome to attend this public meeting.
KISD SUMMER SCHOOL Summer school programs for the school year will be held atMittelstadt Elementary. There will be only one session for elementary students in June 2011. Classes will be Monday –Friday from 7:45 am-2:15 pm. Registration will take place at the home campus during the month of May.Please consult the Klein ISD website for more information.
LIBRARY NEWS
Our Spring Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, May 11th and Thursday, May 12th. We are thrilled to offer this educational experience to our students and invite your entire family to participate by visiting us during book fair. Detailed information on the book fair will be coming soon. Our Star Reader program is going strong! Theiss Tigers in grades first through fifth have earned their Star Reader T-shirts with many more close to reaching their goals. Our Wednesday after school program allows students to take quizzes from 3:15 to 3:45 and many students have taken advantage of this additional time. Permissions slips are required and can be picked up in the library.
The library would not be what it is were it not for the generous support of our PTO and we cannot thank them enough! PTO pays for our on-line Renaissance Place Star ReaderProgram, the prizes the children receive when they reach their goals, visiting authors who enrich their reading experience, improvements to the library and many other things that make library time a rewarding time for our Theiss Tigers. SPOT LIGHT NEWS
The 5th Grade Science Fair was a tremendous demonstration of the students understanding of the scientific method. The students worked for months developing and conducting experiments and their results were on display beginning March 1st. Judges reviewed the student displays, and the winners were awarded special ribbons for their outstanding efforts.
PRACTICE CONSISTENCY TO GET RESULTS
A study has found that adults can dramatically increase the compliance of preschool children who don't obey by following a three-step compliance program.
David Wilder, the lead researcher of the study and psychology professor at the Florida Institute of Technology, says that when the regimen is followed consistently, children are much more likely to follow adults' commands.
Even though the procedure may sound simple, Wilder says, it won't work if it is not applied with consistency.
In the study, preschool-age children were given simple commands such as "Give me the snack item" and "Put the toy away" and "Come here." If the child responded on the first request, the instructor responded with brief praise. If the child did not comply, the instructor made eye contact with the child and said his or her name and briefly and gently touched the child's chin.
The instructor then went on to repeat the command and model the behavior he or she desired from the child. If the child complied, he or she was rewarded with brief praise. If the child did not comply, the request was made again while being guided by the instructor to perform the activity.
Instructors were assigned to perform at 100 percent consistency, 50 percent consistency, and zero percent consistency for the study.
Wilder's study found that when the instructors were 100 percent consistent, compliance improved dramatically; at 50 percent, compliance improved somewhat; and at zero percent, compliance did not improve and sometimes decreased.
