* A silhouette is a black outline shape without details in the middle.
* We use contour lines to make the outlines of a silhouette
LESSON CYCLE / HOOK. / TIME
Students are in learning position
“Has anyone been to Memphis or Little Rock?” SW raise hands. “Did you notice any big buildings when you were there?” SW answer “yes” or “no” / 1 minute
INSTRUCTION. / TIME/MATERIALS
“Today, we’re going to be talking about the way the big buildings in cities form something called a skyline.” TW display pictures of Memphis, Little Rock, and Chicago skylines. “We can see that the buildings stick up above where the sky starts. When they do that, we can see their outline against the sky. During different times of the day, especially when the sun rises and sets these buildings become almost one connected shape seen in black. When there is a whole shape in black without details in the middle it is called a silhouette.” TW show examples of silhouettes. TW connect skylines to silhouettes. “If we want to draw a silhouette we can use our contour line skills to make the outline. TW demonstrate using contour lines to make a skyline. / 10 minutes
GUIDED PRACTICE. / TIME/MATERIALS
TW guide students in making a skyline by getting building shape ideas from students, drawing on board and having students mimic on whiteboard. SW follow along with skyline. SW practice making skylines on their whiteboards. TW circulate to troubleshoot. SW Raise their hand when they have a design they like. TW check design and pass out black paper for final skyline.
When you have made a design you like, raise your hand and I will give you a black piece of paper. Look at the skyline you drew and use those shapes that you liked to draw your skyline in pencil on your black paper. Remember to fill the whole length of the paper from end to end. Once you have it drawn you will cut it out and glue it to your color background.
TW demonstrate the independent practice with the same talk aloud thought process. / 10 minutes
