Update ofJune 17, 2015 Permit Tech Training
The training was held in the Fairfax County Government center from 9:00am until 4:00pm. There were 47 attendees that came from as far away as Richmond. The morning session included an overview of the VBCOA given by Steve Higginbotham and a presentation by Mindy Spruill from DPOR about Board of Contractors and licensing. The afternoon session was conducted by Debby and myself and we gave participants information on how to become a permit technician in the state of Virginia and how to become certified by the ICC and the DHCD. The presentation was revised to include more tips and tricks to pass the ICC certification examination and many helpful handouts. Feedback was very positive.
I will provide the region representatives with information about the attendee’s office locations and job titles as listed on the sign-in sheets when Debby returns from vacation.
CEU Opportunities for Certification Renewal
I stated that there were some certified Permit Technician in the training that were there to obtain CEU’s. We discussed the different ways this can be achieved for those that are unable to attend trainings that take place out of the office. Below are the suggestion that were given.
- Attend Local Board of Appeals
- Education to Go Courses online
- Fred Pryor Courses online
- American Wood Council

I talked about how the contractor and licensing information presented by Mindy Spruill from DPOR was well received and helpful to the trainee’s. I informed them that DPOR representatives are very willing to do presentations in your office or region upon request and that I have requested her to do a Lunch and Learn for my staff on August 20, 2015. Paula stated that representative from the DPOR Investigations will be doing a training at the Region III meeting on August 13, 2015. I requested and she has provided the list of training items which is have listed below.
. DPOR is going to provide our training event on the following subjects:
- Standard of practice and conduct
- Folks who are exempt from a license, specifically folks working as “tradesmen” under another’s license
- Prohibited acts
- Who’s responsibility to prosecute, DPOR or Commonwealth’s Attorney

Future Training
Debbie and I have been asked to do a training in James City County (Williamsburg area) and Wytheville and we have discussed doing them in the fall. We will incorporate a survey at the end of training to get feedback from attendees.
- Wytheville Training
Jada stated that she made the request and would speak with he Building Official to secure the venue for an October training. She indicated that if we are able to set a date and get the flyer prepared before theirRegion I meeting on August 13, 2015 she will distribute it at the meeting and encourage Region II to participate.
- James City Training
I mentioned that the VBCOA Annual Conference occurs on September 13-15 in Virginia Beach and that I would speak with Debbie about the ability to maybe do the James City training session on September 11, 2015 since it is on the way to Virginia Beach. Since the next scheduled conference call is on September 11, 2015 I asked if they would be agreeable to having the meeting on another day. They agreed that it would not pose a problem I will get back to them as soon as I discuss it with the Debbie.
