WALKING PILGRIMAGE TO SANTIAGO DI COMPOSTELA

PRE-BOOKING
In order to firm-up a booking for the proposed walking pilgrimage to Santiago di Compostela in 2017, we now need a more definite idea of the number of parishioners who are seriously intending to join this pilgrimage. Given the large numbers who have expressed an interest, we now need a clear indication of how many rooms, single and twin/double, we might require.
COST OF THE PILGRIMAGE
The estimated cost of the pilgrimage will be as follows: quotation is per person in GBP – based on minimum of 40 people travelling:
The estimated cost per person (based on a group of 40) will be: £974.25 per person (not including single room supplement)
This price includes: 7nights self-guided walking on the section from Sarria to Santiago based on 2 adults sharing a twin/double room in higher grade hotelsand an extra night in Santiago in a higher grade hotel(all with private bathroom); 8 breakfasts and 8 dinners;Flights from Heathrow to La Coruna and La Coruna to Heathrow*; transfers between La Coruna airport and the first/last hotel; Pilgrim’s Passport; unique walking booklet;Camino map; Emergency 24 hour local telephone number – English speaking; a group manager to accompany our group on the trek; a specially organised swinging of the Botafumeiro for our group in Santiago on the Saturday evening.
*Flight prices have been estimated at £250 based on 2016 prices (for a group of 40) and may be subject to change.

Single Supplement (person): £234 Single supplement per person based on higher grade hotels
Upon booking, a deposit of £125 per person will be required. Initially the booking will be made on a land only basis. Once the flights have been published an extra deposit will be required to cover the costs of the plane seats.
ITINERARY
Day 1 -Saturday 27th May: Arrive in La Coruna and transfer to just outside Sarria in under two hours
Day 2 - Sunday 28th May: Follow winding cart tracks to reachPortomarin, a town raised from the valley floor stone by stone to make way for the Mino reservoir. The village can still be seen when the reservoir is low. 13 miles walking, ascent 792ft, descent 1122ft
Day 3 –Monday 29th May: Quiet country lanes and tracks lead over the Sierra Ligonde to Palas de Rei.
15 miles walking, ascent 1485ft, descent 594ft.
Day 4 – Tuesday 30th May: A day of gentle rolling hills as the Camino winds its way through ancient villages and farming communities to Melide.
9 miles walking, ascent 330ft, 825ft descent.
Day 5 – Wednesday 31st May: More pretty countryside takes us to the town of Arzua.
9 miles walking, ascent 462ft, descent 528ft
Day 6 – Thursday 1st June: Continue through rolling farmland and forests we come ever closer to Santiago. Overnight in Rua. 11 miles walking, ascent 660ft, descent 825ft.
Day 7: - Friday 2nd June: Before reaching the outskirts of Santiago, we pass through Lavacolla where Pilgrims once washed away weeks of dirt in the river. We enter the Pilgrims’ Gate and finally stand in front of the Cathedral. 13 miles walking, ascent 165ft, descent 297ft.
Day 8: Saturday 3rd June: A free day to explore the beautiful city of Santiago. At 19.30 we will attend Mass in the Cathedral, where we will see the swinging of the Botafumeiro*.
Day 9: Sunday 4th June: Transfer to the airport for the flight back to Heathrow.
* Swinging of the Botafumeiro
We will be fortunate enough to be able to witness the swinging of the Botafumeiro in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. This famous giant thurible or censer has been use Middle Ages, originally to clean the air once crowds of pilgrims ha de Santiago. This ritual has been taking place silver plated brass. Eight men called tiraboleiros are required to operate the Botafumeiro. After being filled with incense and coal the Botafumeiro is tied to a rope hanging by the altar and is set in motion with great precision, forming an impressive 65 metre long arched trajectory along the cathedral.
