May 2015
Dear Parents of Team Quadra,
Welcome to another edition of our team newsletter! Time surely flies as we enter the final months of the year, and there are still lots of learning going on in our team:
In Language Arts, we are beginning an independent novel study unit where each child selects a novel and is given the next four weeks to complete. The goal of this is to foster the love of reading and to continue to practice applying reading strategies learned from the first two terms. At the end of the unit, students will be asked to complete a book review.
In Math, students continue with the Albanesi cards as well as working on the second booklet of their Geometry unit. It is strongly encourage that students copy some of the cards home to work on as extra practice.
In Social Studies, we are wrapping up the mini-lessons on Ancient Mesopotamia. In the following weeks, students will complete an in-depth research project on one of the following Ancient Civilizations:
- Japan
- China
- Rome
- Egypt
- Maya/Inca
- Greece
- Vikings
They will produce visual pieces for their chosen civilization that will be part of the Quadra Ancient Civilization Museum in June.
In Science, students don their detective hats and have to solve an environmental problem that has risen in a fictional location called Gray Area. Through lessons, discussions, experiments, and other activities, students will try to figure out what is contributing to the mass death of fishes in the area. This unit will teach your child about ecosystems, how they are interconnected and affected by various interactions between organisms as well as human impacts.

In P.E., we have just finished our track and field unit and have started the badminton unit. We are also very fortunate to have guest instructors come into our school to teach students about the sport of netball. Recently, we have noticed that a number of students arrive to gym classes without an extra change of clothes to change into afterwards. They have been constantly reminded about the importance of personal hygiene, and is a basic expectation for P.E.
In H.A.C.E., our last group of students completed their carnival project, which was extremely successful and raised just over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We are very proud of the organizing group in making it such a successful event! Moving forward, we will begin our sexual education unit for the next 4 to 5 weeks. Please see the attached notice for more information.
Lastly, here are some things to look forward to in May:
- May 1 (Fri) - Food Production Celebration Potluck Lunch
- May 15 (Fri) – Bowling Field Trip @ Zone Bowling
- May 18 (Mon) – Victoria Day – No school
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us!
Sincerely,
Mr. Kwok and Ms. Jianfar
