A visual diary is a great tool and a joy to look through. The quick sketches are impressions and not meant to be finished artworks, and can be used as reference material.

The Art of Science: Remarkable natural history illustrations from Museum Victoria
A Museum Victoria touring exhibition 13/12/12 until 17/2/2013
at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery Victoria Tues-Sun 10am – 5pm
Whether they fly, swim, crawl, wiggle or walk, we are endlessly fascinated and inspired by the creatures of our world. The Art of Science showcases the uncommon beauty produced from 300 years of exacting scientific observation and illustration.
In this exquisite exhibition Museum Victoria presents the development of scientific art from the museum’s seldom seen collection of artworks and rare books, and stunning images produced with microscopes, macro-lenses and computers.

PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR ARTWORKS
A demonstration and talk by Jason Woolard at our November 2012 meeting
In the WASA newsletter dated Sept 2012, Patrick Hedges wrote a most enlightening article on this topic. As we had already booked and advertised the program for the November meeting, we felt that this subject could be enlarged somewhat. We feel the following notes agree with, and enhance Patrick’s advice.
Jason Woolard is a professional photographer and teacher of this art for amateurs and professionals alike. He endeavours to demystify digital photography.
Moving along from Patrick's comments, Jason entered the field of lighting with more options for you.
More megapixels allow the picture to be enlarged with better results. About 8 or more is enough.
Set the painting up on an easel and point at camera (also on tripod) exactly straight on.
Many zoom lenses will give the best result around the middle of the zoom range, where distortions will be minimized. This will ensure that your photograph shows the straight edges of the frame correctly.
Depth of field is not terribly important because the painting (subject) is flat.
