Introduction of biological phenomena at the molecular level, and with emphasis on eukaryotic molecular biology. Special Topics in Biochemistry: 3 credits
Study of the special structures and functions in cells including the biochemical mechanism of cell signal transduction, chromosomal genetics, proteins folding, tissue development and in vitro fertilization. Instructor: Oi-Tong Mak.
Advanced Techniques in Microbiology:
Culture methods of bacteria, fungi and virus are introduced, focusing on the study ofspontaneous mutagenesis and its prevention. The biochemical techniques forcondensation, purification of viral proteins and nuclei acids are introduced, such asultracentrifugation, chromatography, electrophoresis, antibody and immunologyanalysis etc. Instructor:
Enzymology: 3 credits
Study of the important factors- enzymes – in metabolism and their basic structures, purification methods, enzyme kinetics, reaction mechanism, the control of enzymes in cells, and applications in clinical and industrial settings. Instructor: Oi-Tong Mak.
Structure Biology: 3 credits
Four topics are included: the contents, structure, stability, and physical interactions of macromolecules. II. The structure-function relationship,and the interaction between macromolecules and biologically active molecules. Cellular Biotechnology: 3 credits
This course focuses on advanced related culture techniques, research methodology, recent mass production techniques, and their applications. Instructor: Lynn L. H.Huang.
Protein Technology: 3 credits
This course focuses on recent developments in protein biotechnology. Topics on recombinant protein production, isolation, purification identification, and applications are covered. Instructor: Lynn L. H. Huang.
Research Methods in Biomaterials: 3 credits
The purpose is to train graduate students with capabilities of identifying important problems, literature search, experimental design, data analysis, model and hypothesis establishment, as well as writing a good paper. Instructor: Lynu L.H. Huang.
Biophysical Techniques: 3 credits
Introduction of the physical properties and identification techniques of proteins, nucleic acids, and other bioactive macromolecules. Instructor: Mei-Fen Jeng.
Protein Chemistry: 3 credits
Recombinant proteins are the major products of biopharmaceutical industry. There key techniques are required for production of recombinant proteins:

This course is major focusing on the technology of functional genomics which is used to study the expression level for specific proteins in organism.
