2. Previous Minutes (Reference Co-operative)
Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as correct
3. Presentation: Introduction to Genealogy Resources (fiche, cdroms, websites)
by Elaine Craig (Whitehorse Manningham, Local Studies SIG convenor)
Elaine’s excellent and informative presentation will be available from the Community Access part of the PLVN website. ISSIG agendas, minutes and presentations will be available from this website
The Ref Co-op infonet will continue to operate at this stage and Elaine’s presentation will also be added to
4. Reports
Gulliver
The Gulliver Review is still underway – Karyn Siegmann will report to the PLVN executive meeting on 2nd March with decisions regarding Gulliver Core and BRUCE databases to then be made at the PLVN General Meeting on 16th March.
Library Link Victoria (LLV)
Janet Salvatore reported that the upgrade had improved the federated search.
SLV(Patrick Gregory)
- Reference training for public library staff - contact Yen Wong 84467000, some spaces still available for April. Cost is $60
- Major website redevelopment
- 20 New research guides launched including one on bushfires with scanned primary material
- Chat widgets
- More genealogical content on website and new genealogy blog
- Virtual Reference being looked at in conjunction with other state and national libraries may lead to Ask Now being re-vamped
- Database usage has increased since the launch of the new website and the federated search approach
5. Library Reports
Casey-Cardinia
- Starting RFID using FE Technologies – live in June
- Aiming for 50% self checkouts
- New library to be built at Pakenham
- Undertaking reference interview training
- Focusing on core reference competencies – identified need for database training
- Reviewing database subscriptions for 2010-2011
Central Highlands
- Identified need for database training
- $13,000 grant from Heritage Victoria to digitise oral histories, transferring from cassettes
- Have developed template for digitised format of rare and fragile holdings that all SWIFT libraries can use
- Safari E-Books are not on the catalogue
Monash
- Wireless technology training will take place in March
- New library building planned for Glen Waverley including new technologies
- Finished review of reference collection
- New Book Chat programs
- Conducting informal Reader Development sessions with library users
Bayside
- Participating in 2nd round of “Being the Best We Can Be” program
MooneeValley
- Established wireless at 4 of the 5 branches, going well
- Launched new databases including Rocks Back pages and Who Else Writes Like
- New round of staff database training and extension to staff training wiki
- Living Books trial
- Have a new website and a Facebook fan page
Greater Dandenong
- Focussing on outreach services to emerging communities
- Also taking part in “Being the Best We Can Be”
Geelong
- New web site in development
- New jobs on offer
- New branches
- Shared Leadership course and project moving ahead
Hume
- Looking critically at all subscription databases - may discontinue the lot
Goldfields
- Re-vamping online resources pages, adding widgets
- Weeding stack into specific collections such as Australiana
- Now have 50 fans on Facebook
Boroondara
- New library at Camberwell
- Hawthorn branch redevelopment
- Introducing a front desk wiki to include rosters and all other information staff need while on the desk
- Re-vamping internet training
Mornington-Penninsula
- New web site launched
- About to introduce wi-fi
West Gippsland
- Family and Local History room at Leongatha on the 4th March
- Re-focussing on early years programs
Port Phillip
- “Being the Best We Can Be” just begun
- Re-configured staffing model to allow more time for reference activities
Moreland
- Wireless project
- Trialling online booking event program – Eventbrite
- Web 2.0 training
- Collecting veteran's stories
- Ongoing staff forums, half day training 4 times a year
- New multi-storey library in Coburg planned for the next 3-5 years
Brimbank
- New information Services team
- Need for database training
- Focussing on basic reference training
- All libraries open at 1pm on Tuesdays allowing for staff training sessions
- Developing an Information Services strategy
Glen Eira
- Renovated Bentleigh library on track to open mid year
Ideas workshop
An ideas workshop was held to discuss ISSIG’s new format, Terms of Reference and meeting topics.
Results of group discussions:
- The Information Services Special Interest Group (ISSIG) to meet 4 times a year
- In 2010, the meeting dates are on a Monday 15 February, Monday 17 May, Monday 16 August and Monday 15 November
- The group recommends scheduling two meetings from 10am-1pm, and two meetings from 10am-3pm per year
- Meetings need to be held before Community Access Subcommittee meetings (February 22, May 31, August 30, November 29 to allow the SIG convener to report back
- Meetings to be held at MAV in Collins Street, with the potential to move to alternative venues if necessary for topics/speakers
- Opportunities will be sought for joint meetings and shared projects with other SIGs within the Community Access Subcommittee and with others such as the Reader Development SIG, Local History SIG
- Training/professional development activities could be arranged within ISSIG, across SIGs, by the Community Access Subcommittee or another PLVN based grouping
- ISSIG Terms of Reference should link to the Community Access Subcommittee TORs
Future meetings topics:
May 17: Virtual Reference – how are libraries providing reference and information services to their online customers? Will include discussion about library websites, web 2.0 resources such as Facebook and Twitter, Ask a Librarian Services. Guest speaker Leneve Jamieson to discuss the NLSA’s Virtual Reference Project [to be confirmed] (10am-1pm at MAV)
August 16: Online Reference and Information – online reference tools. Will focus on subscription and free databases. Strong crossover with the Gulliver SIG. Consider inviting a representative from Gulliver or holding it as a shared session (10am-3pm at MAV)
November 15: Digitisation projects and PROV (Public Record Office of Victoria) resources – guest speakers will include a specialist in digitisation from the SLV and a representative from PROV (10am-3pm at SLV)
ISSIG Terms of Reference:
1. To provide a forum to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences which enhance Reference and Information Services in Victorian public libraries
2. To provide a forum to examine and discuss local, national and international trends and issues in Reference and Information Services in public libraries
3. To provide a forum to discuss and develop guidelines for the development of reference collections, including print and online resources
4. To promote public awareness and usage of Reference and Information Services in Victorian public libraries
5. To work co-operatively with PLVN subcommittees, Special Interest Groups and other organisations to support the development of training and professional development programs for Reference and Information Services staff
6. To encourage the use performance indicators as a tool for library services to advocate for support of Reference and Information Services and collection development (print and online)
Membership
The Information Service Special Interest Group comprises public library practitioners in the area of Reference and Information Services
At the November meeting, the Special Interest Group convenor will be nominated from the group for a 12 month term
Meetings
The Special Interest Group will meet on a quarterly basis. Project groups may also meet as required and will liaise with the SIG convenor. Special Interest Group meetings will be held approximately 2 weeks before the Community Access Subcommittee meetings
Reporting
The SIG convenor or delegate will prepare a written report for all PLVN meetings and an annual report for the PLVN AGM
