Recognizes the Power of Passionate Prayer - In this message we begin a group of messages on prayer as our act of gratitude. Right off the bat we are wrestling with some unexpected thoughts! Prayer is what we do when we are in trouble and need help, right? Wrong. The essence of prayer is making requests as an aspect of our thankfulness not as an aspect of our need. This is prayer that rises from our hearts of thankfulness. That’s what we mean by “passionate prayer”: not that our prayers need to be emotional – but rather that those prayers come from our hearts. Prayers from our hearts are intense prayers that recognize our needs but may not seem, on the surface, as particularly emotional. And these “heart prayers” are powerful in that it is only through them that we receive God’s grace and the Holy Spirit.

Diluted Devotion to God’s Deliverer - In this message we listen in on the song of the women of all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul after he returned from the battle in which David killed Goliath. We also reflect on the Holy Spirit’s comment that all Israel and Judah loved David because he led them in their campaigns. Everyone loved David. In fact the nation is devoted to David. The problem is that they were devoted to David because of what he could give them not because of who he was. They had not yet come to the point of surrendering to David as God’s Deliverer who was teaching them that the real enemy from which they needed to be saved was sin and death. They were devoted to the military victories David was bringing.
