Mrs. Bogner and Mrs. Kullman
September 2016
Welcome to the Hamburg Middle School! As a member of the eighth grade, you will be expected to learn and respect our classroom rules and procedures for English Language Arts 8. To help all Eighth Grade ELA students succeed, we would like to explain the course and communicate our expectations to you.
Supplies:
ü 3-ring binder- 1”
ü lined paper
ü blue or black ink pens
ü pencils
ü one composition notebook
ü Two (2) 3-prong, 2 pocket folders
ü dry-erase markers (low odor, optional)
ü highlighter (optional)
The Four Golden Rules/ Procedures: All students will be prompt, prepared, polite and productive.
1. Be Prompt: You are expected to be in your assigned seat and ready to work at
the start of class. Make sure you complete the “Start Up” activity as soon as you enter the room!
2. Be Prepared: You must bring your 3-ring binder, lined paper, assigned novel,
independent reading book and a blue or black ink pen to class each day. You will be keeping your two pocket folders and composition notebook in the classroom.
3. Be Polite: You will be respectful, considerate and polite to all people and
property.
4. Be Productive: You will come to class and use all of the resources available to
learn and explore new and exciting ways to enjoy the English language.
Attendance: If you are absent, turn in the missed homework to us at the start of class the next day! If you are out on an extended absence, (i.e. vacation, illness, etc.) please see one of us so we can get work together for you – this is your responsibility! If you have a music lesson, remember that you need to notify us at least one school day before your lesson and it is your responsibility to get your work! Be sure to check the “Absent” bin for any handouts you may have missed!
Homework/ Assignments:
ü All assignments are due on the assigned due date.
ü Assignments should be complete, written in your best handwriting in blue or black ink or typed.
ü A student who receives a CR (correct and return) on an assignment must correct his or her work and return it to Mrs. Bogner or Mrs. Kullman the following class day.
ü A student will not earn a grade for CR until it is corrected and re-submitted to Mrs. Bogner or Mrs. Kullman.
ü Points will be deducted from any assignments that do not meet these expectations.
Independent Reading Challenge (IRC): All students should be reading for a minimum of 15 minutes a day. You are expected to read your IRC book at home, during D.E.A.R. time and in class on IRC days. You will have writing assignments to accompany each IRC book. More information will be sent home soon about IRP!
Tests and Quizzes: Tests will always be announced. Quizzes may or may not be announced. Tests and quizzes will vary in structure- multiple choice, short answer questions, fill-in-the-blank, true-false, essay questions, etc...
Grading: Quarterly grades are determined by adding all points earned in a marking period, divided by the total possible points. Grades will consist of homework, quizzes, projects, journals, class participation and test scores. Grades will be available on Parent Portal throughout each quarter.
