When you put a great bunch of people together you get – well, Wahoo Masters Swimming Club, of course! Which is why we are growing and growing and growing! So much so, we were featured in the latest SAMS newsletter which says:
‘Wahoo is being touted as the fastest growing SA Masters Swimming Club ever. So far this season, no fewer than 25 new ‘Wahooligans’ have been registered! Great work Wahoo for setting the pace and laying down the gauntlet!
Could of course be ouroutstanding purple t-shirts –they do make us stand out a LITTLE.
Could also be our brand new and very purple gazebo– as was the case at the Sun City Swim.
Our very proud thanks go to our very own Wahooligan, Mike Davies, for organising and running the extremely successful 2006 Sun City Swim. We have had copious congratulatory comments on the way it was run. Take a bow Mike! And to all the Wahooligans who pitched in without so much as a quiver of hesitation – you are all STARS. Bright purple stars! Please note, my dear noblemen and women, purple is the colour of royalty!
After our ‘Head Session’ I am sure we are all psychologically ‘winning’ and I hope that you are all well on your way to achieving the winning physical condition. Of course, we will all look very beautiful at Nationals – bodies finely tuned, muscles rippling……… (for the old ducks among us that will be a psychological state, as we can only remember the physiological state) For the young chicks – enjoy it while you can! We hope to see ALL Wahooligans at Nationals, and even if you think you haven’t reached that perfect state of fitness – come and experience what old hats at masters swimming regard as THE event in the masters swimming calendar.
Wishing you all a safe and happy festive season.
El Presidente

Cool Swimming Kit / What can I do?
I am sure that many of you ask this question:
I am in such a great club, and I am getting so much, how can I give something back?
•Recruit
Try and recruit a member every season. There is power in numbers, and the more members we have the more benefits WMSC can offer. (Dream of a full time coach…) So you score even more.
•Train
Try and get in the pool at least 3 times a week. That is the minimum amount of training suggested by studies to maintain a “feel” for the water. You will also find that you will get fitter, your blood pressure will drop and your lung capacity will increase. Studies have also found that exercise, but particularly swimming, helps to alleviate stress and depression. It also aids in increased resistance to illness. In short, you will be healthier and happier.
•Set goals
Set a goal towards Nationals, but also from gala to gala. There is a saying of “those who fail to plan, plan to fail”. Set realistic, measurable and time-based goals. ( i.e. one of my goals is to swim the 100 Freestyle in 1:06 at Nationals 2007) Setting goals will make you more focused and will keep you motivated.
•Participate
Attend Galas
The best way the train for a gala is to do one. In doing galas you will motivate yourself to do better
in the next one. You will then be motivated to train better and more. (So you will get better, fitter and healthier…)
You will also make friends with your club mates and they provide wonderful swimming tips!
Attend Club Training and Clinics
In attending the Club training and Clinics, you will stay motivated and swim better. Swimming can be a lonely sport and doing it with other people is a great incentive. Psychologists have found that people who have regular contact with other healthy people are healthier and happier.
•Volunteer
The committee of this club is made up of volunteers. They cannot do everything however (even though they try) and will call on people to help with a number of things. At each gala, please offer your help with timekeeping; help with things at galas and at Nationals.
People who do volunteer work have a sense of purpose and feel good about being needed.
•Keep a healthy attitude
Roosevelt has said that people are as happy as they make up their minds to be.
Most emotion is choice, and I have been amazed at the goodwill in Masters swimming.
Allow yourself to be awed at what others can achieve.
In swimming, there are many people that are an example to me: people who have overcome adversities (in and out of the pool), and people who surprise themselves in what they achieve. That motivates me.
Wahoo MSC is part of a bigger family and we cheer as hard for others as we do for the Wahooligans (well maybe we cheer a bit harder for the Wahooligans)
The person that came last is just as important the person that broke the record. At least I was in the pool, not sitting next to the pool in envy wondering if I am good enough.
•Shortly: You are a winner.
We want you to do all these things and be a focused, fitter, healthier, happier and motivated purpose- filled achiever.
You sound like a winner to me.
Yours Swimmingly
Slavissimo

Short course Champs: 29 October 2006
Wahoo did very well in the Gauteng leg of the Short course Champs. The Purple presence was felt: We established a number of Short course Relay records. Thank you and well done to all who attended.
Inter Regional’s 11 November 2006
The first of 2 Inter-regional galas was not well attended – even though we lay second in Club points; we have a lot to make up! It was a particularly social event and great fun. Thank you to Tshwane for a well organized event. And a great braai afterwards!
Killer Whales Gala – 25 November 2006
The last gala of the year! Wahoo outdid themselves and established a few more SA relay records. Wahoo now holds 9 SA Short course Relay records!
Bob Hatherley broke another SA record in the breaststroke and now holds the SA records in the 50, 100 and 200 breast!
/ Development Programme
Our own Development Programme!
A core focus of the Sasolburg Nationals 2007 Committee is to encourage swimmers from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to experience masters swimming at Nationals in March.
Wahoo Masters Swimming Club contribution is to offer sponsorship to previously disadvantaged individuals. This sponsorship includes SSA, SAMS, GMS and club registrations fees for this season. Conditional on attending at least one masters gala before Nationals, it also includes sponsorship for Nationals 2007 registration, event entry and social event fees. Free coaching, by one of our masters members, on Sundays at Wahoo Aquatics during the masters training hour is offered should this be requested.
Our target is to have six such Wahooligan at Nationals. Should you know of anyone that would be interested please forward their contact details to El Presidente. It would be great if you invited them to Sunday morning club training as well!
