ALGEBRA 1A

Marsha Reddick

2011-2012

Objectives:

  • To know and understand the concepts of algebra.
  • To develop skills in algebra, including logical reasoning and measurement in both mathematical and real-world situations.
  • To understand algebra as it relates to other disciplines and its importance to further mathematical study.

Course Description:Algebra is a course for all students and is required by the state of Kentucky for high school graduation. Topics covered in Algebra 1A include:

  • Expressions,
  • Measurement
  • Linear equations in 1 variable
  • Linear inequalities in 1 variable
  • Exponential equations in 1 variable
  • Introduction to modeling
  • Scatterplots
  • Statistics

Grades:

  1. At the beginning on each unit students will receive a listing of learning targets for that unit. These targets describe what the student should know and be able to do by the end of the unit. ( Learning targets for this course are also available on my teacher web page)
  1. Lessons will focus on these learning targetswith accompanying activities and assignments that provide students with support and practice towards meeting these goals. Students should know the learning target that each lesson addresses.
  2. Students will be quizzed every 2-3 days to monitor their progress towards meeting these goals. These quizzes let the student know where they are in his/her learning cycle and lets me know how I need to adjust my instruction to meet student’s needs.Students may improve a quiz score by showing improvement on that target on the end of the unit assessment.
  1. At the end of the unit students will be assessed on their understanding of the content addressed by the learning targets. The assessment will be scored and students will receive feedback on their performance for each learning target.( Scoring guide attached)
  1. Students will have the opportunity to show improvements in understanding by taking a second assessment( about 1 week after receiving feedback) for any target that the students does not master on the initial test. Students will work on additional “target practice” in order to improve in their understanding of the material before retesting.
  1. The number one goal is that the student masters the material and the grade should reflect their level of understanding.

The TERM grade will be based on the following items:

  • Tests 50%
  • Quizzes40%
  • Assignments/daily work10%

The term grade accounts for 80% of a student’s overall grade

In addition to this grade students will take an End of Course exam covering all material for that trimester. This counts 20% of the overall grade.

Students and parents make check grades online by using INFINITE CAMPUS. Please check with the guidance office for details.

Students are expected to:

  • Respect others in the classroom.
  • Respect themselves.
  • Be on time.
  • Be seated and completing the daily DO NOW activity when the bell rings.
  • Bring abinder, and a pencil every class period.
  • Complete all work assigned in a timely manner.
  • Complete all work at a level that demonstrates proficiency. Students who do not achieve proficiency on their initial attempt are expected to continue work on the topic until proficiency is achieved. I WILL BE AVAILABLE TUESDAY AND THURSDAY MORNINGS for extra assistance and retesting.
  • Compile a MATH BINDER. The notebook will contain the following items: Do Now activities, vocabulary, notes, math labs, homework, tests& quizzes.

Supplies:

Binder

Paper

Pencils

1 package of 3-A batteries (for the graphing calculators)

1 ream of copy paper

1 package of contruction paper

NOTE:

Graphing calculators are available for student use during the class period. Each student will be assigned a calculator. If it is damaged, the student may be assessed the cost of repair or replacement. Students may opt to purchase their own calculator. If you choose to purchase a graphing calculator, I recommend purchasing the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. However, I realize that graphing calculators are quite expensive and they are available for classroom use.

Don’t Forget -

If you feel that you are falling behind do not wait to ask for extra help. Homework help is available before school from 7-7:30 a.m.

Parents or guardians may contact me at school (270-384-2751) or by e-mail - or .

My planning is 4th block and is the best time to reach me or make an appointment. I can also be reached at home (270) 384-1333.

I look forward to an exciting and successful year with each of you!
