Weikel Elementary School
Absence Policy:
Please contact the school if your child is going to be absent. If you are calling the night before to report an absence or illness, please leave a message. 719-358-4320
The following are excused absences:
- Personal illness-a doctor’s note is required
- Death of a relative
- Observance of religious holidays
- Military block leave-up to 5 school days with a copy of military orders
- Doctor, dental and therapy appointments with proper documentation
- Emergency situations-such cases will be approved by administration on an individualized basis
The following are unexcused absences:
- Personal illness without a doctor’s note-while we understand illness happens; a parent phone call or note will not constitute an excused absence
- Military block leave without orders
- Family events – weddings, vacations, graduations, birthdays, family visits, other family member’s appointments, etc.
Attendance Codes:
- A student is tardy if he/she arrives between 7:30-9:00
- A part day A.M. absence when arriving between 9:00 and 11:00 or leaving and returning during the morning hours
- A half day A.M. absence when arriving between 11:00 and 1:00
- A part day P. M. absence when leaving after 11:00 and returning
- A half day P.M. absence when leaving between 11:00 and 1:00 and not returning
- A student will receive a reverse tardy when leaving between 1:00-2:25
Tardy Policy:
Tardiness has a detrimental effect upon the rights of the non-tardy student to uninterrupted learning. Tardiness is the appearance of a student after the scheduled time that a class begins or departure prior to the end of the school day. Tardies and reverse tardies will be converted into unexcused absences. Elementary schools may convert five tardies into a part day absence. We ask that parents keep their child/children in school for the entire academic day. Instruction will take place bell to bell. Students who arrive late or leave early miss important instruction.
Weikel Attendance Procedures:
Weikel staff is passionate about student attendance. With that in mind, below are the attendance procedures we will adhere to in order to ensure collaboration between home and school.
- After five unexcused absences or seven unexcused tardies, your family will receive an Attendance Update Letter from the school’s attendance team
- If unexcused absences or tardies do not improve, a second letter will be sent home indicating a potential attendance plan and involvement with the district’s attendance liaison
- After the second letter, if needed, a meeting will be scheduled with the school’s attendance team to determine support needed or next steps
- Beyond that meeting, the attendance issue will be turned over to our district’s attendance liaison
