►ONLINE ACCOUNTING 110 COURSE ACTIVITIES
- Be sure to check for Announcementsoften… every day, just like your e-mail and text messages! Announcements can be found by going into the Discussions area on left side of the screen. An Announcement is a message from the Instructor to all students. It is your responsibility to check for Announcements. They will give you critical information: perhaps additional Quiz information or assignment information, comments on assignments or topics that many students are asking the same question about. They also may have files attached to them. IT IS BEST TO CHECK THE ANNOUNCEMENTS AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE. There could be more than one in any given day.

2.You are expected to actively and frequently engage in Group Discussions. To do this, Select Discussions on the left edge of your screen and then open the GROUP FORUM area. Compose a message. Other students will be able to open and read it. Our messages will be grouped in a hierarchy called threads. Another way to think of it is as nesting one message below another, as one student replies to another’s comment. If you open another student’s message, select Reply to create a message that replies to the first message.
When a student leaves a message saying he/she is having trouble with an assignment question, for example with a Journal Entry or some other Accounting topic, you, the students are expected to jump in and help the student having a concern. I’ll be monitoring the conversational postings. I’ll also be monitoring the content of your questions and replies. Stick to Accounting and Excel topics only. This is NOT a social Chat Room. Please use only BUSINESS-LIKE and PROFESSIONAL LANGUAGE! Please do not engage in conversation not related to Accounting or Excel course content. Do not expect other students to do your homework for you. Remember, if you don’t know how to complete the homework problems, you will not be able to complete Quiz problems and Quiz entries either!
3.Use the Mail feature (left side of screen) to send a private message to me, not my OCC e-mail address. If you do not follow these instructions, I will ask you to re-send the message using the Mail feature in Blackboard Learn! It helps to be able to find all your e-mails relating to the course within the course e-mail feature.
4.Do not fall behind in your work. There are two Accounting Quizzes… they will be here sooner than you think. You are not required to turn in your homework problems, but arerequired to prepare each and every assigned problem. The answers will be made available to you in the Accounting Homework Answers Area at appropriate times. Be sure you have tried your best to complete the computer exercises and Exercise Questions. Then check the answers. Identify why your answer(s) differ from the correct answers, tracing back through your computer entries.
5.Do not work too far ahead. You may find that online notes and instructions may be updated shortly before their scheduled week of instruction. Assignments associated with the Accounting portion of this course have been posted in the Assignments column of the Syllabus. You will be notified when the Excel Assignments become available.
6.Please be sure to visit the Accounting Notes Area. It contains Accounting tutorials that will help you refresh your Accounting knowledge. These notes also will be valuable as study notes for the Accounting Quizzes. You will be permitted to use these Notes in the Quizzes!
7.This is NOTan Open Entry/Open Exit course. It is necessary for you to keep pace with the weekly course requirements and to take the Quizzes at the designated times.

►ADDITIONAL ACCOUNTING NOTES
- Make your entries in the sequence and timing that you would use if preparing this work manually. Making your General Journal Entries, Adjusting Journal Entries (AJEs) and Closing Entries all at once will not enable you to answer the Exercise Questions correctly. These must be done in separate stages, with Exercise Questions answered between each type of entry. The textbook will guide you.
- After making entries to the various Journals, be sure to generate the Preliminary Trial Balance (that’s the Trial Balance prior to entry of the month-end Adjusting Journal Entries). Trial Balance figures are used to calculate amounts recorded in the AJEs.
- Do not post Closing Entries unless the textbook instructs you to do so.
- REMEMBER that Insurance is always recorded as a PREPAID ASSET as is Supplies.
As Insurance expires, you will record an AJE to recognize the monthly Insurance Expense portion. We prepare this entry at the end of the month.

Insurance ExpensePrepaid Insurance (Asset Account)
As Supplies are used up, you will record an AJE to recognize the value of Supplies that has been used during the month. We prepare this entry at the end of the month.

- You will be working with three different companies:
Instruction material practice:KRISTINRAINA INTERIOR DESIGNS
Case Problem 1:LYNN’S MUSIC STUDIO
Case Problem 2:OLIVIA’S WEB SOLUTIONS
- When posting a Purchase in the Expenses tab, do not be confused by the term Expenses. In this window you may be posting a debit to an Expense, to an Asset or to a Drawing account.
- Be sure to back up your data file as you go along. Have a completely separate location on your hard drive where you have a second copy of your data files… the ones that you are completing which contain your entries.
Example: C:\OCC\ACCT110\COMPLETED FILES\Your Name
