CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2003

3 P.M., FACULTY/STAFF COMMONSOF THE GUC

The UNA Curriculum Committee met at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2003, in the Faculty/Staff Commons of the GuillotUniversityCenter. The following members were present: Dr. Keith Absher, Dr. Birdie Bailey, Dr. Eddy Joe Brackin, Dr. Sharon Campbell, Ms. Wendy Darby, Dr. Kerry Gatlin, Dr. Robert Gaunder, Dr. Fred Hattabaugh, Dr. Anna Lott, Dr. Joyce McIntosh, Dr. Janice Myhan, Dr. Joan Parris, Dr. Elliott Pood, Dr. Lynne Rieff, Dr. Garry Warren, and Ms. Jane Wilson. Dr. Bill Huddleston, chairperson, presided. Guests included Ron Shady, Craig Christy, Bob Garfrerick, Frank Himmler, and Charles Joubert.

The minutes of the meeting of December 4, 2002, were unanimously approved on motion by Dr. Brackin and second by Dr. Rieff.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Foreign Languages to provide credit-bearing diagnostic language placement tests

Dr. Parris moved approval and Dr. Rieff seconded the motion. After continued discussion, Dr. Absher made a motion to table and Dr. Rieff seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. Dr. Pood indicated he would present at the next meeting proposed test scores which could be published in the catalog much like the CLEP and AP scores are published.

Consideration of the request from the Department of English for the addition of a new course, EN 310W, Consideration of the request from the Department of English for adjustment of requirements resulting from departmental assessment process in English major concentration

Dr. Brackin moved approval and Dr. Parris seconded the motion. After a brief discussion, Dr. Lott made a motion to table and Dr. Rieff seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of English for course number/title change – EN 460 to EN 360

Dr. Rieff moved approval and Dr. Parris seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the EntertainmentIndustryCenter – change MU/ENT 426 to ENT 426 and to add a $30 laboratory fee

Dr. Lott moved approval and Dr. Gaunder seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. The course fee proposal will be presented to the Board of Trustees for approval.

Non-Substantive/Editorial Change: Request from the Department of Art to change time of offering of AR 222

This was presented as an informational item which required no action from the committee.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Art to change course content and name of AR 446

Dr. Lott moved approval and Dr. Gaunder seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Psychology for cross listing of ED 299/PY 299

Dr. Myhan moved approval and Dr. McIntosh seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Elementary Education for specification of general electives to meet No Child Left Behind mandate

Dr. Parris moved approval and Dr. McIntosh seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the College of Nursing and Allied Health for course title changes for NU 301, 302, 304, 305, 306, 308, 406W, 407, 409, 410, 411, 414

Dr. McIntosh moved approval and Dr. Rieff seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the College of Nursing and Allied Health for course prefix changes from NEC to NU

Upon motion and a second by Dr. McIntosh, the motion was approved unanimously. Dr. Bailey was requested to add the special fee to each course description rather than have it as a blanket statement at the beginning of the courses. These course listings will continue to be placed as a separate listing from the regular nursing courses in the catalog.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Geography for a course title change for GE 413

Upon motion by Dr. Lott and a second, the motion was approved unanimously. It was pointed out that there was a typographical error in the proposal in that the course title change was to occur for GE 413, not 412.

Consideration of the request from the College of Nursing and Allied Health to add a laboratory fee to NU 306, 308, 410, and 411

Dr. McIntosh moved approval and Ms. Darby seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. The course fee proposals will be presented to the Board of Trustees for approval.

Criteria for establishment of laboratory fees

A question was raised as to whether or not the committee should consider criteria for the establishment of laboratory fees whereby a department requesting the addition of a laboratory fee would be required to provide documentation on the cost of delivery of the course. By consensus, it was determined that at the next meeting, a revised Curriculum Change Proposal Form will be presented which will add a line for laboratory fee request and justification.

Upon motion and a second, the meeting adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
