Calibration instructions

1.  Sign on to the computer

2.  Enter the password into the software (lionroar) and then exit the software

3.  Turn off the red line receiver box

4.  Walk out to the antenna and open the preamplifier box. The light that says “power” should NOT be illuminated.

5.  The preamp has two cards plugged in to slots on the main board. Remove those two cards, but before doing so, please mark which card was in which slot. There are black serial numbers written on the cards to help identify which is which

6.  In the top right corner of the preamp card, there is a chip with a white sticker labeled “comb cal”. Remove this chip from each of the two cards, you may need to use needlenose pliars or tweezers to do so. (see picture)

7.  Replace those two chips with the new ones that were sent to you.

8.  Make sure that the chips in the cards are oriented correctly. You should see that one edge of the cal chip has a little notch in it. This notch should be facing upward.

9.  Place the two cards back in the slots they were in.

10.  Close up the preamp box, but not too tight since you have to come back out.

11.  Walk back to the computer, turn on the red line receiver box

12.  Reopen the software with the VLF_DAQ Recorder icon on the desktop.

13.  Synchronize your watch with the time on the recorder so that you know the correct Universal time to within 10 seconds or so.

14.  Walk to the antenna and open the preamplifier box

15.  The red light should now be on. If it is, wait until the beginning of a minute that is a multiple of 5. For instance, between 1:00-1:01, or between 1:05 and 1:06, are ok. However, not between 1:01 and 1:05. Also, do not do this between 23:00:00 and 23:59:59 Univerasl Time (UT being the time displayed in the software, which is eight hours ahead of Alaska daylight savings time, and 9 hours ahead of Alaska standard time).

16.  When the appropriate minute arrives, press the “caltone” button and HOLD it for five seconds. When you press the button, the “power” light should remain on, and the light next to the caltone button should light up.

17.  Wait 30 seconds, and then press the “caltone” button again, for five seconds

18.  Write down the time that the button was pressed

19.  Close and tighten the preamplifier box.

20.  Email Morris (), Mark (), and Dan () right away to let them know the time you pressed the calibration button. If you don’t’ have immediate email access, feel free to call.
