Reflect & Write
· Why do you think that Elliot starts with the example of the college student and the university setting? Is this an effective introduction? Why do you think Elliot made this stylistic choice? What alternatives might he have used and how would this have affected the tone and argument of the article?
· Consider Elliot’s use of the first person in the article. How does this choice create a connection with the audience? What rhetorical appeal is he relying on here? Does he relying on other rhetorical appeals at other parts of this article? If so, identify those places and how the appeal works.
· What audience is Elliot writing for? How can you tell? What assumptions does he make about his readers? How might he change the article if his audience shifted – to readers in a developing country, for instance?
· Write: Write a Time Magazine article that updates Elliot’s article for the current global situation, more than 7 years later. Be sure to use effect visual rhetoric – whether in the form of photographs or information graphics – to support your position on the topic.
