NREM 330: Introduction to Interpretation
Spring 2012
Presentation 1: Photo Hike
Due 2/2/12
Bring: a photograph of a place where you have been hiking. The picture can be any size, format, etc., but must be a trail you’re familiar with.
Details:
We will be taking imaginary hikes along these trails. You will lead us on a 5-minute hike along your trail, showing us some of the things we can see, smell, or touch along the way. This is our first performance and so the guidelines are loose. You will gain some experience talking to a group as well as practice with assessment.
Assessment:
Each of you will be assigned to assess 3 other presenters using Feed Forward as a constructive way to help each other become better presenters. You will also have the opportunity to get started using a rubric to help you evaluate your peers as well as plan your own work.

Presentation 2: Story and Sensory Aids
Due 2/16/12 and 2/23/12
Bring: a children’s story and one or more sensory aids (visual, tactile, auditory, etc.) that will help you engage the audience in the story. Your story should be for grades K-3. (It is okay to bring a photo of an appropriate aid for in-class presentations if you don’t have access to any)
Details:
We have seen several ways that a story can be told through interpretation. You will interpret a natural resource or cultural topic through the use of storytelling. Imagine that you have been invited to a classroom of young children. You have 8 minutes to present to the class who will role-play as your K-3 audience.
Assessment:
Each of you will be assigned to assess 3 presenters usingFeed Forward and a rubric. You will also be graded on your outline, so be sure it is complete and clear.

Bring:any aids/supplies you need. If you want to use any audio/video/computer equipment you must let me know ahead of time.
Details:
You will work in pairs to develop an interpretive program for an adult audience. You may imagine one of these scenarios: 1) You have been invited to a senior center to present; 2) You’ve been asked to speak at a Garden Club; 3) Your weekly Citizen Steward (Master Conservationist/Naturalist) group can’t take their regular hike because of inclement weather so you need to move indoors. Your team will present to a group. 15 minutes.
Assessment:
You will be assigned other groups to assess using Feed Forward and according to a rubric. You will assess each individual in the group. You will also be graded on your plan (submit 1 per group), so be sure it is complete and clear. You must also submit an appropriate media packet to advertise your event.

Your team will lead a program in the morning and lead the students in a service learning experience in the afternoon. I will also interact with the site hosts to coordinate for the group.
Assessment:
You will be assessed based on your preparation, your performance at the field day, and the feedback of the site staff. You will also be graded on your plan (submit 1 per group), so be sure it is complete and clear.
