1) Sound effects for the arrival of the Norwegian team at the South Pole and Account from Roald Amundsen
Målet var nådd, reisen avsluttet . . .
[The original account in Norwegian is heard then fades to low audio under the English translation. Geir O. Kløver provided original Norwegian From page 120-121 in the Norwegian edition of The South Pole (Sydpolen), volume 2]
The goal was reached, the journey ended. . . After we had halted we collected and congratulated each other. . . After this we proceeded to the greatest and most solemn act of the whole journey—the planting of our flag. Pride and affection shone in the five pairs of eyes that gazed upon the flag, as it unfurled itself with a sharp crack, and waved over the Pole.
[From The South Pole, by Roald Amundsen]
2) Sound effects for the arrival of the British team at the South Pole and Account from Robert Scott
The worst has happened, or nearly the worst. . . .the
Norwegians have forestalled us and are the first at the Pole. It is a terrible disappointment, and I am very sorry for my loyal companions….
[RFS diary, Jan16th 1912]
We built a cairn, put up our poor slighted Union Jack, and photographed ourselves—mighty cold work all of it….
[RFS diary, Jan18th 1912]
All the day dreams must go; it will be a wearisome return.
[RFS diary, Jan16th 1912]
