Exploding the Myth – Supporting Families Affected by Homelessness

‘If you’ve ever taught a child experiencing housing difficulties, you’ll know the instant affect the disruption has on their education – and the lasting impact on their life.’
The majority of homeless children will be part of a family unit.When a family unit is faced with situations that cause instability and upheaval, such as eviction or repossession of the family home, families can find themselves homeless.In some situations, young people can be forced to leave.Some of these young people will be statuary school age.
In the next instalment of Exploding the Myth, you will find information to support families including links, advice and resources to help those affected by homelessness.

Welcome to Kevins World
Year 6 is a year of many changes for pupils and their parents.There is a lot of advice and assistance about the transition to ‘big school’.Much of the information is focussed on the academic side of the change; practical support on how to prepare your child for the different learning setting of secondary school and responsibilities they will have.However, very little is discussed about the longer term personal, emotional and social changes that students will begin to experience and how this can impact on home and family members.

Waste and Recycling is Fun

Schools are invited to join a competition to collect the most waste electrical equipment per head of pupil during May and June 2013. Essex Recycling officers would like to hear from any Primary, Junior or Infant schools in:
Basildon; Castle Point; Colchester; Harlow and Uttlesford
We will provide you with all the information needed for distribution to pupils, and provide the resources needed for storage and collection:From kettles to cameras, battery-operated toys to toasters, power drills to mobile phones, you can recycle the lot.Up to 97% of the materials in electrical waste can be recycled and used in new products, which helps divert waste from landfill.
We are offering a prize of new electrical equipment or a recycling workshop to the school that collects the most waste electrical equipment per head of pupil during their chosen week.

Following last year’s success, schools are again able to take part in the summer schools programme.
Schools will be able to access funding to provide one or two week summer schools.The intention of the programme is to improve the transition between primary and secondary schools for all Ever6 FSM (pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years) and LAC (looked after children) pupils who attract the Pupil Premium.
The programme is not competitive and all eligible schools that apply by 31 May 2013 will be allocated funding.

Technical Baccalaureate (TechBacc) Announced

A TechBacc has been announced to provide young people with the opportunity to earn a vocational qualification on par with A-level students, as well as, offer them employability skills ready to compete in the global economy.
Made up of three elements (high quality vocational course, maths (level 3) and literacy skills), the TechBacc is expected to be introduced in September 2014 and reported for the first time in the college and school sixth-form performance tables in January 2017.

New Advice for Teachers Pay

The Department for Education has published advice to help schools decide how to pay teachers. All schools can expect to receive advice, alongside a revised version of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.
From 1 September 2013 schools will be able to link teachers’ pay to performance and will need to have revised its pay and appraisal policies ready for September 2014 when the first performance-linked pay increases will be made.
