Periodicals Collection
The Kean University Library provides access to more than 59,000 different newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals. The newspapers listed below, along with many others, are available online through the Kean University Library. Visit the Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu), click Periodicals List, and then click Periodicals List again under the heading labeled Locating Periodicals in the Kean University Library. Use the search form to search for and locate holdings information for the following newspapers and thousands of other periodical titles:

Chicago Tribune
Financial Times

Electronic Databases
To start using the Library’s electronic databases to search for articles on certain topics using your key words, go to the Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu). Click Articles & More to access the Databases. The databases are organized in two different lists. In one list the databases are listed alphabetically, and in the other list the databases are listed by subject or format. Brief directions are provided on the next pages to help you navigate these electronic databases. Note: When you are off-campus, you will need to log in with your Kean Google username and password after you click on a database name.
ProQuest Newsstand To search ProQuest Newsstand for articles from a comprehensive collection of
international, national, and regional newspapers, such as New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Times of London, The Guardian, El Norte, Jerusalem Post, and South China Morning Post:
ü Start at the Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu).
ü Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.
ü Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu.
ü Click ProQuest Newsstand (ProQuest).
ü Type your key terms in the search box.
ü Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For instance, type:
middle east and (overthrow* or revol*) and (power* or dictator*)
ü Click the search button.
ü Result: The first 20 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see a Full text link, a Full text - PDF link, or both immediately below the item. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.
ü E-mail the article you are viewing by clicking Email located at the top left-hand side of your screen.
ü If full-text link options are not present, click Find a copy, then click TOUR to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.
ProQuest Historical
Newspapers: The New To search ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The New York Times for
York Times newspaper issues, articles, and advertisements:
ü Start at the Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu).
ü Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.
ü Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu.
ü Click ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The New York Times.
ü Type your key terms in the search boxes.
ü If you would like to find articles published on a specific date, then click Advanced Search.
ü Specify a particular date in the Publication date section. For instance, click On this date…, then plug in the date you were born.
ü Type the following key terms in the first search box:

ü Click the search button.
ü Result: The first 20 retrieved article titles will be displayed. Click the Full text - PDF link to view the full-text article. Click Page view – PDF then Open with your PDF reader to view an image of the page on which the article appeared.
ü E-mail the article you are viewing by clicking Email located at the top left-hand side of your screen.
EBSCOhost Research To search the EBSCOhost Research Databases for periodical articles using
Databases your key terms:
ü Start at the Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu).
ü Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.
ü Click the letter E on the alphabetical menu.
ü Click EBSCOhost Research Databases (EBSCOhost).
ü Click EBSCOhost Web.
ü Select databases pertinent to your research topic, such as Academic Search Premier, Newspaper Source Plus, and/or Regional Business News.
ü Click Continue.
ü Type your key terms in the search box.
ü Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For instance, type:
egypt* and (topple* or overthrow*) and Mubarak*
ü Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals under the Limit your results heading.
ü Click Search.
ü Result: The first 10 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see one or more of the following links immediately below the item: HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, or Linked Full Text. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.
ü E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail (envelope icon) located on the right-hand side of your screen.
ü If full-text link options are not present, click the TOUR button to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.
LexisNexis Academic To search LexisNexis Academic for news using your key terms:
ü Start at the Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu).
ü Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.
ü Click the letter L on the alphabetical menu.
ü Click LexisNexis Academic.
ü Locate the box labeled Search the News.
ü Type your key terms in the box labeled Search For.
ü Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that contain specific phrases. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type:
"social network*" retail*
ü Notice that the By Source Type drop-down menu automatically defaults to Major World Publications. If desired, select another option from the menu before clicking Go to run the search.
ü Result: The first 25 retrieved article titles will be displayed. Click the title to access the full-text article.
ü E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail (envelope icon) located in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
Flipster To browse Flipster for issues of popular magazines:
ü Start at the Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu).
ü Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.
ü Click the letter F on the alphabetical menu.
ü Click Flipster (EBSCOhost).
ü Browse the recent issues of magazines of interest.
National Geographic
Virtual Library To search National Geographic Virtual Library for issues from the popular magazine:
ü Start at the Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu).
ü Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.
ü Click the letter N on the alphabetical menu.
ü Click National Geographic Virtual Library.
ü Browse the Spotlight issues or click Browse Magazines to access older issues.
