Please give a very brief historical overview of this Commission:
COAL was established in 2005 as a NCTE commission to explore theoretical and practical applications of expanded views of literacy. COAL also supports members’ research and teaching in all areas of the arts, and promotes the role of the arts, multimodality, and digital technologies as a significant part of being literate. COAL meets once each year at the annual NCTE conference. As of 2013, there are approximately 90 members on this committee.

Commission Charge(s): What is the purpose of the commission?
Charge 1: To explore and promote theoretical and practical applications of expanded views of literacy;
Charge 2: To engage in continual dialogue about what it means to be literate, and how the arts, multimodality and digital technologies offer insight into today’s perspectives on literacy;
Charge 3: To initiate projects that support member’s research and teaching (publication/presentation) in all areas of the arts.
What major actions or projects have been completed by your committee since November 2012?
- COAL proposed and will present a roundtable session at NCTE 2013
- COAL members have been extraordinarily active in publishing and presenting their work in intern/national journals and inter/national conferences.
- Two COAL members presented at the CEE Conference in June 2013: Carol Hoyt and Wendy Williams presented Imagination, Creativity, Innovation and the Common Core: Examining the Role of the Arts in English Language Arts/ Literacy Instruction
What projects, initiatives, or studies are “in progress” at this time and what is your progress in completing your charges?
- We have established a facebook page for the group;
- We submitted a proposal for a themed issue of Language Arts
What has your committee done that the membership in general should be aware of?Please compose a brief post for the CEE web site that highlights your ongoing work.NCTE staff will see that your text is posted on your commission’s behalf.
COAL has consistently encouraged ways in which to promote the arts, multimodality and digital literacies in English/language arts settings. COAL also has collaborated with art spaces (e.g., museums) to collaborate on projects that have generated into workshops and publications.
From the perspective of the work of your commission, are there any issues or topics the CEE EC should consider undertaking as focal areas for future policy-making or goal-setting for the entire organization?
None at this time.
