GUTO BACH AND THE FAIRIES
Once upon a time, a little boy named Guto Bach lived in Llangybi with his parents. They were very poor. One day he brought home some coins made of white papaer. His mother asked him: «Where did you get them from?»
«I was playing with some little children on the mountain, « said little Gutto, «and they gave them to me.»
«Whose children?» asked his mother.
«I don't know,» he replied. They were very nice!
But his mother knew they were fairies, and she said: «You must never go to the mountain again.»
Guto really wanted to play with the children again. So, he disobeyed his mother and ran off to the mountain. He did not come back and nonody could find him anywhere.
Two years later, Guto's mother opened the door and there was Guto. He was the same size but he wore nice, new clothes.
«My child, where have you been all the tile?»
«Mother,» said Guto, «it was only yesterday I went to play with the children. Lookat the nice clothes they gave me.
Guto's mother was sure the children were fairies so she burnt the clothes.
Now, in Llangybi, people said there was a treasure under a rock but nobody had managed to move it. Guto's father had many debts so he decided to try again. His neighbours brought all their horses to help him. But the efforts of all the men and horses of Llangybi were in vain. Guto's parents were disappointed.
Guto rememberd that the little children had plenty of gold and silver, so he decided to ask them for help. He went to the mountain again and found them playing. He asked them for somme money.
«No, there is plenty of gold and silver under the rock in Llangybi, « they said.
«But all the men and horses of Llangybi can't move it.»
«We know, but you try», said the children.
Guto went home and told his parents. They laughed at him! But they were desperate, so they all went to the rock. Guto put his little hand on it, and shook. So he pushed and the big rock rolled down the hill. Under the rock there was enough gold and silver to make Guto and his parents the richest people in Caernarvonshire.
