General Information

Description

During the 2016-2017 school year, we will complete all of the 6th grade and half of the 7th grade math curriculum. The general education 6thgrade math class will complete 6 units within one year. This Accelerated Math 6/7A class will complete 10 units in one year. This class starts with Number System Fluency (Unit 1) and ends with 7th grade – Ratios and Proportional Relationships (Unit 10). For greater detail go to This site will provide notes, class assignments, assessments and some solutions. More importantly in simple language the site tells you what your child should be able to do in the form of “I can statements.” Parent(s), double check to be sure that your child “can” explain what is being taught in class.

Expectations and Goals

Students are expected to come to class prepared to learn and participate. In order to save instructional time all of the class notes will be posted online at I will go over the notes in class. The majority of class time will be spent working through math problems. It is expected that students will print out or copy the Cornell Notes and write questions that can be answered by the notes. Some questions will be questions of clarification. Those questions can be addressed during class. If a student has a short term technology challenge at home, write a note and I will assist in helping the student acquire access to the notes. Notebooks will be checked for a completion grade and utilized for open notes test. Parents are expected to review the Cornell Notes periodically to ensure that their child is accepting responsibility for their own learning.

In addition to printing and using Cornell Notes we will be using the 4 step solving problem method to solve real world math problems. The four steps (UPSC) are Understand, Plan, Solve and Check. This approach is used because it helps students develop their problem solving skills in and beyond math class.

Grading Policy

Grades are cumulative through the end of each semester and will be based on demonstrated mastery of math concepts. Updated grade reports will be posted on Infinite Campus on a weekly basis so students and parents may continually monitor academic progress. I encourage you to do so! You can access Infinite Campus at Please contact the school office for more information on logging in. Grade reports will go out every four and one half weeks. Student performance will be assessed in three areas:

Homework:10%

Summative Assessments:40%

Formative Assessments:50%

Enrichment / Acceleration for Gifted / Advanced Content

Although I will follow the Bibb County pacing guide and GSE (Georgia Standards of Excellence), my gifted and advance content students will have additional course requirements that will challenge them academically. The purpose of this course is to provide gifted / advanced content sixth graders with an enriched and accelerated math program. Some of the in-class enrichment opportunities will include robotics, chess and 3-D computer aided software projects.

Note: This syllabus is subject to change to meet the needs of students

Math Help

I’m available for extra help before school on Tuesday morning from 8:00 -8:40 PM. The majority of this time will be for students who consistently struggle with math concepts. A pass from myself will be required in order to enter the building for tutoring. Single questions should be addressed in class. Conceptual issues over previously taught material will be addresses in tutoring.

The following supplies will be needed for this course:

  • 3 ring binder for Cornell Notes
  • Manual (small) pencil sharpener
  • Highlighters (recommended for Cornell Notes)
  • Pencils
  • Colored Pencils
  • Graph paper
