Thames Boating Holidays: from the Magna Carta to Celebrity Sightings

A cruising holiday on the Thames this summer offers 800 years of history, a royal castle and the chance of celebrity sightings along a 25 mile stretch of England’s iconic river.

“A luxurious cruiser is a fantastic holiday option and the river offers ‘back stage’ access to the Thames Valley’s most beautiful, historic and sought-after locations,” says Waterways Holidays boss Nigel Richards.

Waterways Holidays suggests boarding at Datchet before a short run downstream to discover Runnymede where Magna Carta was signed on 15 June 1215 – the riverside site is owned by the National Trust and open every day.

Turning upstream, pass by Old Windsor (home to Sir Elton John and David Furnish), Royal Windsor, Eton College (some parts of which are open to the public) and well-heeled Maidenhead: keep a look out for Uri Geller and Sirs Terry Wogan and Michael Parkinson taking the air at their riverside homes.

At Taplow, the National Trust’s Cliveden estate has riverside moorings so take a walk in the beautiful gardens, or afternoon tea at Cliveden House itself, which is now a luxury hotel.

Further on are Marlow and Henley, where a stop at the River and Rowing Museum is a must.

Then the Thames winds through rural Berkshire to pretty Sonning, where George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin are renovating their £10M country home. Enjoy a pint in The Bull, where they’ve already been spotted.

Typical of the quality cabin cruisers available from Waterways Holidays is the Lady Natalia, which offers both space and luxury for two couples. The 34-feet long boat has dual steering, a sun roof, comfortable seating in the saloon, central heating and a well-equipped galley. The two double cabins, each with its own shower and wc, are at opposite ends of the cruiser for privacy as well as comfort.

A week’s rental in June is from £1734 (£433.50 per person based on four sharing). Damage waiver fee and fuel are extra.
