POSITION: Care Service Employee - Care worker

RESPONSIBLE TO: Chief Executive Officer

ROLE

Care Service Employee - Care workers will be required to develop a caring and trusting relationship with residents by providing a reliable high quality service where resident’s needs are of prime importance and where ever possible residents are the decision makers in relationship to their own care.

Care Service Employee - Care workers will be required to provide personal care, assistance with daily living activities and companionship, to enable residents to live a safe and satisfying life in the environment of the Multicultural Village Illawarra hostel.

DUTIES

Any or all of the following maybe required of a Care Service Employee - Care worker

·  To provide companionship and emotional support to residents of the village.

·  To assist residents with activities of daily living as required e.g. bathing, dressing, grooming, continence management and personal hygiene, fitting of aids, washing, basic cleaning etc.

·  To provide assistance with health care. To co-ordinate residents appointments, assist with treatments and medications within scope of practice and training and provide therapy support.

·  To assist with communication between residents and other service providers and to provide an advocacy service if required. If appropriate and with the resident’s permission liaise with others involved in the residents care e.g. family members.

·  In conjunction with the Care Coordinator, take part in the assessment of resident needs, case conference and the development and review of individual nursing care plans.

·  To fulfil case management responsibilities in all areas of resident lifestyle needs (e.g. clothing tidy and in good repair, reduced clutter, foot wear is appropriate and in good repair, equipment is maintained and clean etc.) and maintenance of resident care files.

·  To complete all administrative tasks associated to the position accurately and promptly. Including:

o  Shift and other daily reports.

o  Documentation of resident cares and significant events.

o  Needs assessments and evaluations.

o  Complete forms as relevant – Accident/Injury, hazard, falls, skin, behaviour, infection, medication error etc.

o  Reading relevant memos and correspondence.

o  All other administration and documentation requested.

·  To understand and protect the rights of residents and staff.

·  To demonstrate a positive attitude towards responsibilities of the position.

·  To maintain confidentiality of residents, relatives, other staff and the organisation at all times.

·  To perform any other duties as agreed by the Care Coordinator and the Chief Executive Officer to assist residents.

TERMS OF APPRAISAL

All staff participate in an initial appraisal at three months and annually thereafter.

ATTRIBUTES

ESSENTIAL:

·  Certificate III Community Services – Aged Care or equivalent. All staff will be required to participate in ongoing training.

·  A Current First Aid certificate.

·  Experience working with elderly people and an understanding of aged care issues.

·  Excellent communication and observation skills.

·  Time management skills.

·  Acceptance of different cultural values and beliefs.

·  Demonstrated ability to work both unsupervised and as part of a team.

·  Willingness to work a flexible spread of hours including weekends.

·  Reliable transport and a telephone.

DESIRABLE:

·  Experience in working with people with dementia.

·  Fluency in a language other than English.

·  Demonstrated understanding of the Aged Care Standards.

·  Working knowledge of ACFI and related documentation requirements.
