What’s in a Name Anyway? Continuing Travels in the Concurrent Credit World…

As the spring semester was winding down on the CSI campus, staff members who serve the needs of high school students in dual credit and tech prep programs (collectively known as concurrent credit) were hard at work meeting with high school counselors and administrators to prepare for the 2008-2009 school year. A lot of the work we do in the springtime focuses on the needs of high schools for the coming school year. Surprisingly, a lot of this legwork involves a fair amount of travel inside and outside of the MagicValley. We’ve grown the number of our concurrent credit high school partners to more than 40 around the state, from Potlatch in the north, Parma in the west, to Ashton and Dayton in the eastern part of the state.

When visiting a community and school for the first time, we are always on the lookout for unique high school names and mascots in the towns we visit. Consider some of the unique combinations we have encountered this past year in our travels for the college:

  1. The Salmon RiverSchool District is only four years old, and they are collectively known as the “Savages”
  2. Kuna’s mascot is the ”Cavemen,” and we’re not sure if that is inclusive for both genders
  3. We have “Vikings” in Middleton and Valley, “Raiders” in Rimrock, “Pirates” in Prairie, Hagerman, Payette, and “Vandals” in McCall-Donnelly. All are related only because their mascots tend to have big moustaches…
  4. You’ll find “Mustangs” in Melba and “Cowboys” in North Gem, but when their sports teams meet, you’ll never watch a round-up
  5. In the mythical creature division, you’ll find “Dragons” in Malad and “Wampus Cats” in Clark Fork
  6. Finally, there are those high schools who have unique mascots, tied to activities in and around their communities, like the “Miners” of Mackay, the “Russets” of Shelley, the Sugar-Salem “Diggers,” and the “Maniacs” of Orofino (extra credit for anyone who knows why Orofino has this mascot)

Saving the best for last, out of all the schools we work with, you’ll find only one version with the “Golden Eagles” as a mascot. That’s good old CSI…From the staff in dual credit and tech prep programs to all of our colleagues at the College of Southern Idaho, have a safe and restful summer. Feel free to stop by and visit anytime.

On behalf of Eric, George, Cathleen, and all of the support staff working in concurrent credit programs at the College of Southern Idaho.

Picks from the Shelf

No Picks from the Shelf this month from our campus family. Surely some of you out there have a favorite from our own CSI library that you would like to let your co-workers know about. I know everyone would like to hear about them. You can send them in anytime and I’ll keep them on file for the next publication

Remember: If you have a favorite book, movie or CD from our very own CSI library you would like to recommend to your co-workers, let me know about it. You don’t need to be a professional critic. All you need is two to four sentences giving info on why you think it is something folks might want to spend their time on. – Ann Keane, PACE newsletter editor, ext. 6530,

Cyndie Woods
New Position
Coordinator, Construction Training Activity
Canyon 133, ext. 6328
Dated June 2008
Twin Falls is the place I have called home throughout my life. In this rural town: I received most of my education; I married my husband, Jim, of 33 years; and I raised my children, Preston and Kirsten.
In the fall of 2005 while I was working as Executive Officer of the Magic Valley Builders Association, I became the program coordinator of a U.S. Dept. of Labor construction training grant that was given to South Central Idaho via the Home Builders Institute. That grant finished in March of this year and I am now the Construction Training Activity Coordinator for the Workforce Innovations Regional Economic Development, WIRED, grant that has been recently awarded to Region IV Development and the College of Southern Idaho.
Outside of my home and work, my passions are Middle Eastern “belly” dance, traveling with my husband, and scuba diving.
I look forward to being a CSI employee for the next three years!
