How to Find a Power Cord Sku
(for Detachable Cordsets)
This paper will help you correctly identify a power cord and the corresponding APC Sku.
Choosing the correct power cord can be as easy as 1, 2, 3
1: Identify the connector needed on each end.
2: Determine the maximum Amps that the cord needs to be rated for.
3: Choose the corresponding APC Sku from the lists below.
ONE: Identify the connector that you need on each end. This document will discuss three connector types: IEC, NEMA and National (non-US).
NOTE: If you’re unsure of the gender of a specific connector there’s a simple way to determine what it should be. All detachable cordsets are male to female. The male plug connector always faces towards the power source. The female socket connector always faces towards the equipment drawing the power. There are no detachable cordsets with a male plug on each end, or a female socket on each end.

TWO: Determine the maximum Amps that the cord needs to be rated for.
NOTE: You may use a cord to carry a lighter (smaller) amp load than it’s rated for, but not a heavier amp load. Example: if a piece of equipment requires a power cord rated for 13A you may use a 15A cord, but not a 10A cord.
NOTE: Power cords carry voltage ratings slightly higher than their intended use. Example: North American cordsets with NEMA 5 and L5 connectors are rated for 125V although the service at the outlet is 110-120V. Likewise, NEMA 6 and L6 power cords are rated to 250V, but the outlets typically provide 208-240V. And the standard European CEE 7/7 plug is rated for 250V, even though the service at the outlet is 220-230V.
THREE: Choose the correct Sku from the lists below.
The power cords are divided into three categories: North American Cordsets, International Cordsets and National Cordsets (non-US).
1. North American Cordsets have an IEC connector on one end and a NEMA connector on the other, or a NEMA connector on each end.

VOCABULARY
Detachable Cordset: an external power cord with at least one connector on each end. It can be disconnected from both the equipment to which it is attached, and the power source.
IEC: International Electrotechnical Commission. The international standards and conformity assessment body for all fields of electrical, electronic and related technologies.
Locking Connector: a circular NEMA plug that locks into it’s outlet to prevent unintended disconnection. The plug is inserted into the receptacle then twisted to lock in.
National (non-US): power connectors used in countries outside the US. Just like the US has NEMA, several countries have their own standards organizations. Countries that don’t have their own standards will follow the standards of another. For example, many European countries use the Schuko plug which is the German standard. It’s also known as the European (Euro) plug. The Schuko plug is also used in many countries outside of Europe.
NEMA: National Electrical Manufacturers Association. An American organization that develops technical standards for electrical products including connectors.
Non-Locking Connector: A power connector which is held in place by the retention force of the socket.
