Book Manufacturers’ Institute

Membership and Marketing Committee

Committee Purpose

The Membership and Marketing Committee for the Book Manufacturers’ Institute is responsible for identifying those companies which comprise the book manufacturing industry and to work with BMI staff to develop marketing materials, messaging and programs designed to encourage prospective companies to join the BMI.

Committee Composition

The Membership and MarketingCommittee consists of a chair or co-chairs, as well as volunteers from both the Associate Membership as well as the Active membership. At least one member of the committee should be a member of the Board of Directors and act as a liaison to the Board.

Committee Meeting Schedule

The Membership and MarketingCommittee will meetvia conference call on a quarterly basis, coordinated by the Executive Director. Other calls between the Executive Director and Committee Chair/Co-Chairs may occur in between full committee calls in order to move the Committee agenda along.

Committee Responsibilities and Duties

  • With support from the BMI Office, the Committee will develop and maintain a listing of prospective companies that are viable candidates for both Active and Associate membership.
  • For each prospective company, the Committee will identify a strategy for contacting and engaging the appropriate member of that company utilizing specific BMI members as warranted, BMI marketing collateral and other resources as deemed appropriate.
  • For any company that fails to renew its membership, the Committee will establish a follow-up process to understand the circumstances behind the decision and, working with the Executive Director, attempt to reverse it.
  • The Committee will actively recruit volunteer members from within the BMI ranks. This membership should have a strong knowledge of companies and potential member companies across the industry.
  • The Committee will regularly evaluate its marketing collateral and revise it as needed. It may also recommend additional marketing resources to the Executive Director as it deems appropriate.
  • The Committee will assist staff with retention efforts, especially when current members have discussed possibly leaving the association.

Access to Resources

The Committee will work with Executive Director each year to determine a marketing budget. On a case by case basis, the Committee would approach the Board and request additional funding to take advantage of a marketing opportunity or potential travel costs incurred to recruit new members that might fall outside of the annual budget.
