Periods 1,3,4,7 Room C216
The Tool Kit
Standards:
ODE Academic Science Content Standards; Physical Sciences, Grade 11, Benchmark: A: Explain how scientific evidence is used to develop and revise scientific predictions, ideas or theories. Indicator 3: Demonstrate that scientific explanations adhere to established criteria, for example a proposed explanation must be logically consistent, it must abide by the rules of evidence and it must be open to questions and modifications.
ODE Academic Science Content Standards; Physical Sciences, Grade 11, Benchmark: A: Explain how scientific evidence is used to develop and revise scientific predictions, ideas or theories. Indicator 7: Explain how theories are judged by how well they fit with other theories, the range of included observations, how well they explain observations and how effective they are in predicting new findings.
Student Objectives:
9/12: Students will understand my expectations and their roles in this class. The students will come to a consensus about what they expect from me.
9/13: The students will get their books.
9/14: Students will be able to translate SI prefixes into numerical values. Students will be able to connect a quality to its unit (eg. Mass is to kilograms as Volume in to Liters). Students will be able to convert units.
9/15: Students will be able to translate SI prefixes into numerical values. Students will be able to connect a quality to its unit (eg. Mass is to kilograms as Volume in to Liters). Students will be able to convert units.
9/16: Students will be able demonstrate safe lab procedures. Students will be able to measure volumes of liquids.
Rational for Lesson:
9/12: The first week flew by. There were so many schedule issues; I decided to postpone the “classroom expectations” talk until things were settled a bit.
9/13: We need books
9/14: Science is its own language. Units are like its letters. It is important that you learn units, because we will be using these for the rest of the year.
9/15: Science is its own language. Units are like its letters. It is important that you learn units, because we will be using these for the rest of the year.
9/16: I want to introduce some of the equipment we will be using frequently throughout the year. I also want to get you acquainted with volume.
Materials:
You will need to bring your chemistry notebook. Always bring pens and pencils. Don’t forget your homework. Bring your laptops, notebooks, iPads, cellphones, and other devices to class, we will use them.
Pre-class Preparation: What needs done before this day.
9/12: You need to get a good night’s rest. Eat a good breakfast. Leave for school or the bus early so you do not start of school grumpy
9/13: You need to have you parent’s sign and send in your safety contract!
9/14: Make sure you did your homework for today.
9/15: Be prepared for the quiz today!
9/16:
Lesson with Time Allotments: 48 minutes per day
9/12:
20 min: Classroom expectations
-I have pushed this back to the second week because of all of the schedule changes and newness of the school. I want to go over what I expect from you this year in chemistry. I also want to talk about what you expect from me. Is there anything you would to see in this class that you think would help you learn?
15 min: Units pretest.
-I want to know what you know. We get to have another projector quiz. It is not for a grade. I want to see where y’all are so I can help everyone reach understanding.
13 min: Going over the quiz
-I want you to see the right answers.
Closing: I want you to get a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast in the morning.
9/13:
30-40 min: Books
-I will be getting you your books so we can learn.
8-18 min: Read your book.
-Read Section 2-2. It is about units. I want you to DEFINE the following terms as well as STATE ITS BASE UNIT and NAME SOMETHING ABOUT THAT SIZE (example. Mass-The amount of stuff in something. Measured in Kilograms (kg). Small watermelons are 1 kg.):
Terms: Mass, volume, length, and density.
Closing: If you don’t get your reading and homework done in class, you need to take it home to finish.
9/14:
10 min: Go over homework.
-Any questions about the homework.
20 min: Units Notes
-I want to make sure everyone knows the units and prefixes. I want to talk about scientific notation as well. I would like to make a game out of it.
18 min: Practice
-I want to practice what we have learned in a way that I can help people with questions.
Closing: What you don’t finish in class is homework.
9/15:
10 min: Go over homework.
-Lets go over the answers and see how you did.
20 min: Unit Conversion
-We will be changing units a lot this year so we are taking a whole day to talk about how to switch from one type of unit to another.
18 min: Practice makes perfect
-in groups 3, go up to a blank white board. Work together doing conversions. After you finish each question, have Mr. Grady come over and check your answers
Closing: Your homework for the night is page 42, questions 1-5.
9/16:
10 min: Go over homework.
33 min: calculating density lab
-The lab instructions will be on the projector. Each person will calculate the density of marble using mass and volume. In your lab books I want each person to write up your procedure, ALL of your measurements, all of your calculations.
5 min: clean up
-Clean up means clean up and not finish the lab.
Closing: Turn in your lab book as leave and have a nice weekend.
