DAY CARE WORKER - JOB DESCRIPTION
Project Mission
The CDP exists to make a positive difference to the lives of its members and their families and/or carers. This will be achieved through a range of targeted day services offered in a caring environment. The aims are to provide life-enriching experiences for members and respite for their carers.
Goals and Objectives
The Corstorphine Dementia Project is dedicated to providing quality day services support to individuals located in Corstorphine and its surrounding area with a diagnosis of dementia.
POSITION:Day Care Worker
LOCATION:Carrick Knowe Church, Corstorphine
GRADE:GG 1:5
HOURS:32.5 hours per week +8hrs per month overtime (two evenings a month)
SALARY:£12,438 (pro rata £11,307, £6.69 p/hour)
HOLIDAYS:25 days per annum plus statutory holidays
RESPONSIBLE TO:Project Manager for line management
Day Care Co-ordinator for day-to-day supervision
MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE
- To be responsible for performing assigned duties supporting individuals with a diagnosis of dementia in a daycare environment.
- To participate in plans to promote an environment conclusive to a high standard of care according to service users’ needs and wishes.
DAYCARE
- To assist with the setting up of daycare ensuring it is comfortable, clean, safe, suitably equipped and laid out in accordance with the days needs and activities.
- Provide instruction, guidance and support to volunteers enabling them to offer appropriate support to clients and participation in group and one to one activities.
- To respond sensitively and flexibly to a wide range of individual member situations whilst in day care and on transport.
- When required accompany members to the toilet offering assistance, instruction and support.
- Contact members / carers / home support workers concerning daily transport arrangements to and from the Jubilee Club.
- Act as Passenger Assistant on transport journeys twice-daily ensuring clients receive safe and prompt transportation to and from their homes.
- Deliver and present a range of activities to include reminiscence, movement and social elements ensuring the engagement of the group. Evaluate the effectiveness of activities and adapt the programme as appropriate.
- Ensure good practice techniques are adopted when initiating, observing or advising on the safe moving and handling of clients.
- Complete daily daycare records including attendance sheets and food hygiene records as required.
- Relay relevant information regarding members to carers / staff / volunteers as appropriate.
- To participate in the planning and delivery of activities that take place out with the surroundings of day care, for example, day trips, bus runs etc.
- Ensure new or updated information is recorded in members care plans, both hard and electronic copy, in a prompt and accurate manner.
- To welcome visitors to daycare, i.e. carers, professionals, students etc.
- The postholder will carry out any other duties as are within the broad scope and purpose of the job as requested by the Project Manager.
TEATIME CLUB
- Assist with the organisation and delivery of the Teatime Club two evenings a month.
- Act as a Passenger Assistant on transport journeys ensuring clients / carers receive safe and prompt transportation to and from their homes.
- Interact and socialise with members and carers enhancing their experience at the Teatime Club.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- To assist in the implementation of service users’ individual plans
- To communicate effectively with service users, carers and other professionals
- To attend and participate in staff meetings
- To attend relevant training courses to further personal development and/or to improve the service to users
- To record information as necessary in a clear and precise manner in accordance with Project guidelines
- To ensure a health and safe environment for service users, other staff and themselves.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- To undertake such other duties, training and / or hours of work as may be reasonably required and which are consistent with the general level of responsibility of this job
- To undertake health and safety duties commensurate with the post.
- To attend and participate in occasional Project activities that fall outwith normal working hours, for example, AGM, fund raising events etc.
- To abide by and acknowledge the Projects policies and procedures.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential / DesirableExperience /
- Experience of working in a care / supportive environment.
Qualifications / Accredited Training
- Commitment to undertake a Health & Social Care qualification
- Commitment to undertake training in accordance with the National Care Standards and other regulatory bodies.
- SVQ2 Adult Health & Social Care or equivalent
- Passenger Assistant Training (PAT)
- Moving & Handling Training
Skills and abilities
- Able to communicate confidently and effectively with members / relatives / students / colleagues in group and one to one settings.
- Be an adept listener and understand the importance of allowing clients the opportunity to express themselves.
- To be able to observe, record and when appropriate share information in the context of member care, to include hand written documentation.
- Able to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such actions.
- Able to demonstrate good judgment, problem solving and decision making skills.
- Able to meet the physical demands of setting up / clearing away day care furniture, equipment and supplies and supporting service users in accordance with the Projects’ Moving & Handling policies
- Ability to deal tactfully and respectfully with clients, carers, employees, volunteers, health professionals and members of the public.
- Have basic computer skills and be comfortable operating Microsoft Office.
Knowledge
- Understand the dynamics of working in a small team as well as being comfortable to work independently using your own initiative.
- To understand and show interest in the complexities of dementia and the impact it has to those affected.

- To maintain personal and professional development in order to meet the changing demands of the job role.
