Class Description:

Sophomore year is a time for raising the bar. We will push students to increase their writing fluency, expand their vocabulary, organize and speak publically for a variety of situations, critically evaluate their own writing by learning how to edit their own work more accurately, and broaden their literary horizons. This year we really hope that all students will evaluate their own study skills and experiment with various methods to improve their successes, as well as, improve their efficiency. This is a journey of self discovery that we are more than happy to facilitate.

Introductory unit

  • Reading fiction basics
  • Explore Writer’s Inc. text

Vocabulary & Grammar Unit

  • Weekly lessons, review, evaluation
  • Application into vocabulary and writing
  • Proofreading and revising practices

Night

  • Reading comprehension, cultural awareness, literary study
  • Various writing assignments
  • Vocabulary development
  • Theme Analysis Paper

Informative Speech

  • Basic Format of essay
  • Primary & Secondary Research
  • Citations & Work Cited
  • Speech Presentations- Dramatic Reading; Impromptus, Informative Speech, etc.

Semester Exam

Cumulative review of all areas, SO KEEP ALL YOUR NOTES, ETC.

Daily Work =33.4%First quarter = 45%

(prepared, participating, positive)

Short Term = 33.3%Second quarter = 45%

(grammar, vocab., comp. process, lit. quizzes)

Long Term = 33.3%Sem. Exam = 10%

(final tests, final papers, final projects)

Absentee Policy:

  1. You are responsible for getting missed handouts, notes, checkpoints, etc. I cannot get you caught up 2 minutes before class. Sorry!
  2. Announced due dates for papers, projects, and tests will stand. BE PREPARED.
  3. Excused emergency and long-term absences and vacations will be mutually negotiated PRIOR to leaving. If you don’t make plans early, you will be on your own to get caught up.

Late Work Policy:

1. Late daily work will not be accepted but will be excused due to the fact that we’ve already covered the

answers.

2. Any other late work will earn a maximum of 50%. Once papers/quizzes/etc. are returned, there will be no

chance to make up the work.

3. If you know you cannot make a deadline, PLEASE be responsible enough to see mePRIOR to the

deadline, and we’ll discuss it. I have a very hard time empathizing after the deadline has passed.
