Dear Mr. Hoffman:
The fifth grade AT class of Pine Road Elementary is participating in The Unless Contest. The Unless Contest is a contest at the Philadelphia Zoo. This year the theme is Rethink Recycling. As we worked on the Contest we began thinking about how we can help our community save nature by recycling more.
Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth. It includes food chains and is very important for all creatures on our planet. When people cut down trees, animals lose habitats. When people recycle, less new trees need to be chopped down. If less trees are cut, habitats are preserved and carbon levels are balanced. Therefore, recycling is just as important as biodiversity.
Saving energy is also important. When people use electricity and factories pollute the air and water, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide get released into the atmosphere. As carbon levels rise and trees are being chopped down, it becomes difficult for the living trees to balance the carbon. Then the ozone layer begins to weaken. The ozone layer’s job is to save Earth from the sun’s dangerous rays. If the ozone layer becomes weak, this will cause climate change/ global warming.
Solar energy can be helpful to save the ozone layer. It prevents the release of carbon which helps the ozone layer begin to repair itself. If solar energy is ignored, global warming/climatechange continues. Some animal species die out due to heat and weather. Next, the food web is damaged and biodiversity is harmed. Solar energy is needed for people to keep the ozone layer safe.
We, the people of the Township of Lower Moreland can be role models for other places. Developments and main streets have many street lights to illuminate the sky at night. If the lights can become solar powered, then the Township can save money for other important things Lower Moreland needs. Please consider converting Lower Moreland’s street lamps from electricity to solar-powered. Average people can be super heroes and save the Earth.
Sincerely,
5th Grade AT Class
And Mrs. Curatola Knowles, Teacher
