Internships in Aging Project Endowment
Purpose
The Internships in Aging Project (IAP) Alumni Endowmentprovidesan endowed scholarship for IAP students. The fund ensures the continuation of quality field and classroom education in social work with older adults and their families.
The Internships in Aging Project (IAP) is an educational program that prepares MSW-level professional social workers for leadership roles in service to older persons. The innovative IAP Program offers an integrated, in-depth educational experience that provides a solid foundation of social work skills and a specialization in aging. This includes integrated coursework; an internship rotating through agencies that serve older persons; a specialized integrative seminar and opportunities for leadership development through additional courses in management; and projects that identify gaps in services which lay the groundwork to plan for new services.
Making a Difference
Your generous contribution to the Internships in Aging Project Alumni Scholarship will attract future social work students to work with older adults and their families. The nation will require 70,000 social workers who specialize in aging by 2020, a 43% increase from 1987 (National Institute of Aging). Unfortunately, there is a shortage of social workers who are trained in working with older adults due in part to the number of social workers who will be retiring in the next few years but also due to a lack of information about aging and working with older adults.
Within the School of Social Welfare only about 10% of all social work students report an interest in aging. We have found that if students are exposed to working with older adults and their families, their assumptions about aging change and they are much more likely to seek out a career in aging. Therefore, the Internships in Aging Project Alumni Scholarship will: (1) meet the need of the rapidly growing aging population in the country for additional, quality social work and community services; and (2)help recruit social work students to participate in an innovative training program that will increase the number of qualified gerontological MSW social workers in the country.
