Mrs. Pemberton’s

Visual Art-Grading Policy

(4th and 5th grades only)

How I grade

Homework Assignments

Sketchbook Challenges

Participation Credit

Classroom Assignments

Reflections/Peer Reviews/Critiques

  • Homework Assignments-students will receive homework assignments throughout the 9 weeks. These assignments support classroom learning and are expected to be completed at home and returned the next art class (within 1 week). If assignments are turned in late, students will only receive partial credit. If a student is absent the day the assignment is given, they are expected to check the folder that the art teacher has given their classroom teacher for any make up work. If you have any questions about an assignment please email me at and I will do my best to promptly respond. I go back and forth between two schools, so emailing me is probably the easiest and best way to reach me.
  • Sketchbook Challenges-students will earn up to a total of 15 points for each challenge.

5pts-following alldirections given by the teacher.

5pts-writing an artist’s statement.

5pts-turning assignment in when it is due.

My goal for the sketchbook is to establish a love for art, drawing, student expression and establish a positive teacher-student relationship. I want to get to know my students and have them share their interests with myself and their peers. Therefore, sketchbooks are not just limited to the challenges that I assign. I want them to draw freely in their sketchbooks and share them with myself and others.

  • Participation Credit-students have an opportunity to earn up to 108 points during each 9 weeks. Students will earn points for following directions and rules, staying on tasks, positive attitude, respecting classmates, teacher and art supplies. If behavior is affecting classroom performance, a rubric will be sent home in their folder showing participation deductions.
  • Classroom Assignments-each assignment will be graded using a 3 point scale rubric. Rubrics will be posted in the room while students work on assignments. That way a student knows what is expected of them on each assignment. The rubric will be attached to gradedwork showing student’s score and any comments or notes from the teacher. Occasionally students will complete a peer review of each other’s artwork.
  • Reflections/Peer Reviews/Critiques-students will be asked to write about a project from class. They will reflect on things like the materials they used, the process, and the end result. Students will complete critiques on themselves and others during the school year.
