When do I use the Transfer Evaluation Inquiry Form?
Students who have questions/concerns on how their transcript/s was evaluated may use this form. Common concerns are: Courses that were not transferred, credit hours given, LU equivalent courses granted etc.
What are some Guidelines I need to be aware of before submitting this type of request?
EVALUATION OF UNDERGRADUATE TRANSFER CREDITS
- Grade of ‘C’ and Above: Credit will be allowed for those courses in which the undergraduate student has made a grade of “C” or better and which are EQUIVALENT to courses offered at Liberty. The Registrar’s Office, under the guidelines established by the Committee on Academic and Admissions Standards, evaluates transcripts.
- Accreditation: Only courses and degrees from regionally accredited institutions, or those accredited by other accrediting agencies approved by the Department of Education, will be evaluated for transfer credit (e.g. SACS, TRACS, AABC, etc.). Staff/Student may contact the Registrar's Office Accreditation Verification Officer in this number if they wish to check the accreditation status of a given school: 434-592-4225 or 434-592-3893. To check accreditation status of a given school go to-
- 80% Course Requirement: Courses from other institutions must be at least 80% similar in content to receive credit for a specific Liberty course
- Non-transferable Courses: Not every course that is taken at another institution will receive transfer credit by LibertyUniversity. Here is a list of some of the courses that cannot be granted transfer credit. Please keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive: Remedial/Developmental courses – sometimes numbered 1-99,Study skills courses, Computer courses taken over 5 years ago – due to the rapid advances in technology, Pass/Fail courses, Courses within a discipline not currently offered by Liberty, Continuing education courses – usually noted by CEU (Continuing Education Units), Independent studies, Internships, Workshops, Seminars, Co-op’s, Topics courses, Orientation Courses, Developmental Courses, Study Skill Courses and Practicum (Note: This is not a comprehensive list. Some Schools/Departments might have some policies that do not award credit for particular courses. In some rare occasions, an appeal may be submitted and considered for some courses that were initially denied for transfer credit. A course syllabus may be required to support an appeal.)
- Elective Courses: Elective credit can be granted for the courses that are within a discipline offered by Liberty but that may not match 80% of the content of a specific Liberty course. Elective credit course numbers are assigned as follows: For 100-200 numbered courses, we give lower level elective credit (001). For 300-400 numbered courses, we give upper level elective credit (002).Courses will be applied to the student’s undergraduate program, as applicable. At any point prior to the student’s last semester at Liberty, he or she may petition to have courses which are listed as electives to transfer in as required courses by using this form.
- Number of hours granted: The number of hours granted as transfer is determined by the number of hours earned at the institution where the course was taken. To receive specific Liberty course credit the number of hours earned for a course taken at another institution must be comparable to the number of hours of the like courses taught here at Liberty. A course at another institution may be slightly more or less than the number of hours of the comparable course at Liberty. However, if it is significantly less, then the course may not cover the necessary breadth and/or depth of the content and therefore elective credit would be given. We generally use a “two-thirds” rule: a course must be at least 2/3 the amount of hours as the comparable Liberty course to be granted credit for that Liberty course.
- Course Substitution: Some courses may be substituted using the Course Substitution Form. These forms may be obtained from the Registrar’s Office or online:
- Military Service Schools: Undergraduate credit may be allowed for courses completed at military service schools if this credit is recommended in A Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. The work must also be applicable to the student’s program of study.
- Nursing/Education/ Sign Language Courses:Elective credit is also given for allnursing, education and sign language courses. If a student desires credit for specific Liberty courses they will need to complete this form. The Registrar’s Office will send the request to the appropriate department chairperson. The department chairperson will then inform us if specific course credit should be granted and for which courses. The only exceptions to this are the RN to BSN completion students who have completed a nursing school program and hold a Registered Nurse license. They receive the pre-approved 31 hours of nursing credit. .
