Guidelines for a Division II Concentration in the Sculpture Program

Concentrators in IA’s Sculpture Program are required to complete an array of courses and independent projects college-wide in order to satisfy Division I requirements, and to prepare for the Division II concentration through introductory level courses in visual art and art history/theory. It is expected that a Division Two concentration in the Sculpture Program reflects a student's individual interests organized in relation to the offerings at Hampshire and the Five College Consortium. Courses that make up a complete structure of this concentration are as follows:

Sculpture Foundation

Drawing Foundation

Introduction to Painting

Printmaking I

Architecture I

Photo I

Other media can include: Industrial Design (LATDC) graphic design, ceramics, book arts, video, film, etc.

Art History (Three Courses)

(Note: An appropriate range of courses would include a 19th and/or 20th Century Western Art History Survey, Modern and/or Contemporary Art History, Asian and/or African Art History, or Art History courses that focus on a more discrete population, medium or time period such as Feminist Art History, Latin American Art History, History of Design, Baroque Art, etc.)

Intermediate and advanced study in one or more of these media is necessary to fulfill the requirements for a concentration. Independent reading and research in an area of chosen interest will also be expected. It is expected that during Division II students will broaden their education through the exploration of fields outside of the arts. A minimum of three courses in this category should be completed by the end of the Division II concentration. Possible areas of study include:

Theater, Dance, Music, Creative Writing, Literature, Foreign Language,

Philosophy, Critical Theory, Cultural Studies

Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Computer Animation, Mathematics

Social Science, History, American Studies, Psychology

The development of an independent body of work will be required before the Division Two is completed. This work must be generated within or outside of courses from the student's own ideas and research. Field study, study abroad, and summer art programs can all become a part of this concentration. A Division II retrospective statement must accompany the Division II portfolio. A Division II Concentration in the Sculpture Program must incorporate courses and independent work leading towards the completion of the Multiple Cultural Perspectives requirement. Thirty hours of community service are also required. The latter must be accompanied by a written evaluation. When course work is completed, the visual and written portfolios are reviewed and independent work is sufficiently advanced, the committee will recommend passing the Division II Project.
