Organizational Structure:

The Hairdressing Program is comprised of seven courses and is delivered by a post-secondary partner through the district ACE IT initiative. Students will participate in the Hairdressing Program during their grade 11 or 12 year. Students will be enrolled in the Hairdressing Program full time for two school semesters. Students enrolled in this program must also complete all other grade 11 and 12 academic course BC Ministry of Education graduation requirements.

Course Synopsis:

Level Four - Hairdressing (Applied Skills) - [H12D] is the seventh of a seven courses in a two-year, comprehensive Hairdressing Program designed for grade eleven and twelve students who have a serious interest in exploring hairdressing as a viable career choice. Upon successful completion of the six learning units of H12B, students will have a firm grounding in the theory of hairdressing fundamentals including: Basic Electricity, Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Hair Cutting (Clippers and Razor), Advanced Permanent Waving, and Advanced Hair Colouring.

Learning Unit Descriptions

Unit 1: Basic Principles of Electricity

Overview: In this unit students will learn to practice the basic safety principles of electricity.

Learning Outcomes:

It is expected that the students will be able to successfully:

·  Define ten major terms in electricity

·  Understand some basic vocabulary with regards to electricity

·  Demonstrate the safety measures to be followed when using electrical appliances

·  Describe what an electrical current is and what sources of electricity exist

·  Understand the types of uses and effects of electricity in Hairdressing

Unit 1: Basic Principles of Electricity

Overview: In this unit students will learn the basic principles of electricity.

Learning Outcomes:

It is expected that the students will be able to successfully:

Unit 2: Anatomy and Physiology

Overview: In this unit students will have a good understanding of two main concepts: the basic building blocks of the human body and the basic body systems. It also will teach fundamental knowledge of the anatomy and physiology that is necessary to enhance the quality of hair and skin services.

·  Understand the hairdressers need to know the muscles, nerves, circulatory system and bones of the head, face, neck, and hands

·  Identify the structure, function, and primary hairdressing significance of the major body systems including the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, nervous, digestive, excretory, respiratory, and endocrine systems

Unit 3: Advanced Hair Cutting (razor and clippers)

Overview: In this unit students will review basic hair cutting, use of thinning shears, rules for cutting hair wet and dry; scissor over comb cutting techniques, slide cutting techniques and notching.

·  Demonstrate an exterior guide line

·  Demonstrate an interior guide line

·  Blow-dry and finish for a solid form cut, a uniform layered cut, an increased layered cut and a combination cut.

·  On a model, using a checklist, demonstrate the correct use of the scissor over comb technique

Overview: In this unit students will review the principles of permanent waving; the importance of client consultation prior to permanent waving ; and be able to explain the procedure regarding client preparation, liability, and safety precautions). In addition, students will successfully learn the advanced wrapping techniques of permanent waving.

·  Identify a straight perm rod and it’s purpose

·  Identify a concave rod and it’s purpose

·  Identify a sponge perm rod and it’s purpose

·  Identify two alternate types of perm rods

·  Identify the PH of Alkaline, Neutral and Acid Wave, Neutralizer and a Chemical Hair Relaxer

·  Identify the layers of hair that Perming will effect

·  Identify the layers of hair that Neutralizer will effect

·  Identify the layer of hair that a Chemical Hair Relaxer will effect

Section 4C “Review of Client Preparation, Liability and Safety Precautions”

·  Identify the action to be taken if the scalp is irritated, if the scalp has abrasions, if the hair is badly damaged, if a communicable disease is suspected

·  Identify the importance of a liability release form when performing chemical services on a client.

·  Identify the specific purposes for a stand test prior to permanent waving

·  On a model, demonstrate the procedure for giving a strand test

·  Identify the outcome of a negative strand test and the appropriate course of action.

Overview: In this unit students will successfully review the properties, laws, and concepts of hair colouring. They will learn the chemistry of advanced hair colouring, specifically foils, highlighting, and streaking. They will also understand students the importance of client consultation prior to hair colouring (and be able to explain the procedure regarding client preparation, liability, and safety precautions).

·  Identify the PH of Temporary, Semi/Demi, Permanent Colour and Bleach
