- The RYPEN program took place over last weekend.
I picked up our two attendees (Bronwen & Tyler) & took them up to Mt Evelyn to join some 85 others on Friday morning.
RYPEN is a 3 day seminar for selected & sponsored young people 14- 17 years old) on teamwork, leadership, personal skills and fun. It is run each year by district.
On Sunday when I picked them up from the camp to take them home it was amazing how much moretalkative they had become - even with the mandatory lack of sleep!
They are looking forward to sharing their experience with the club sometime soon.

Jeanette has been CEO of Road Trauma Support Victoria for ten years. She won a Centenary Medal in 2000 signed by John Howard.
Jeanette began her talk by asking how many of us had:
- answered their mobile phone
- fiddled with the radio/CD
- talked to a passenger
on the way to the meeting. She reminded us that it only takes a split second of distraction when driving to cause road trauma.
Jeanette talked of recent road deaths – many you don’t read about in the paper.
The Road Trauma Support Centre was first set up in Launceston.
Many people have trauma after road death.
Jeanette and Greg’s daughter, along with her boyfriend, was killed in a road accident in 1991. The drunken, drugged driver who caused it walked away. It took three hours for the police to formally ID Tanya which was like an eternity for the Suhr family.
In 1994 the Victorian Road Trauma Support Centre was set up by Jeanette and a few others and they operated from a home. The now have offices in Whitehorse Rd, Blackburn due to some funding. The group consists of professionals and volunteers (who have been through trauma). The group provides free counselling phone counselling, referrals and education programs. There are support teams for drivers (the crash might not be their fault). There is also support for carers of acquired brain injury victims.
The group also runs a program for traffic offenders and has many participants sent to them through the Magistrate’s Court.
The Road Trauma Support Group recruits, trains and manages support groups for anyone affected by road trauma. It will be extended to Regional areas soon.
They undertake their own fundraising – the largest event being a BBQ and open garden on November 18 and 19. Rotarians can assist in manning the BBQ or selling tickets in their raffle.
Jeanette told us that 1.2 million people are killed on the roads around the world in one year.
350 people are killed in Victoria per year and there are 20 0000 injuries, 6000 of which are serious.
Membership forms are available from Jeanette. Soon she hopes to take programs into schools and clubs on a fee for service basis.
Note from the editor
My family and I had moved into our corner block in May 1991. Jeanette and Greg were our ‘across the road’ neighbours on the bottom side. We knew them at that stage to wave to. Tanya was a beautiful young girl that we often saw coming and going.
Just before Christmas that year, the street went into shock as the police arrived at the Suhr house to inform them of Tanya’s death.
Tanya and her boyfriend had left his house to travel approximately one kilometre to hire a video. They were on their way back to watch it when they were hit by a drunken, drugged driver who ran a red light. Later we found out that he was also manufacturing drugs.
He did not receive the sentence that we were all hoping for, in fact, he got off relatively lightly.
Jeanette is the strongest, bravest person I know, and has since devoted her life to helping others who have to go through the same trauma.
The Suhrs moved not long after the accident.
Greg told me last week that the driver has since killed another innocent person in similar circumstances.
Hi from sunny Brazil, we had a great time in Buenos Aires, Mendoza and Rio de janeiro. We are now in Sao Paulo, going to Santiago soon.
I was wondering what had happened to Conny when I received the email below - looks like all is well
Regards
Peter
Dear Peter
I’m really sorry that I haven’t written back for such a long time!
Our computer is connected with those at my dad’s office. There they had huge troubles (I think they had a virus or something like that) and because of this we got them as well!
But I have to admit that I had heaps of school work in the last two or three month but I also was a bit lazy! The result of all these three things added up together were such a long break!
How are you? Hopefully fine!
How is the weather in Melbourne? Is it still hot or is it getting cold already?
This year we had the coldest winter since ages. It was snowing and snowing and snowing like it would never go to stop. Today it is the first day where we are expecting more than 15 degrees maybe even 20! It’s lovely. The sun is shining and everybody gets “spring feelings”. (If you can say it like that!)
At school everything is fine! I passed every single subject till now and the average of my marks was 2 which equals a B. I thing I’m doing alright for somebody who missed out on a year!
Last Friday we had our (school) ball! It was great, everybody came dressed up and we had a lot of fun!! It lasted till 4 o’clock in the morning. The next day I had to get up really early because my mum had one of her fantastic ideas. She planed a day trip to Berlin. So we took an aeroplane at about 8 o’clock and arrived there one hour later! Then we had exactly 12 hours time to get to know Berlin. My mum loves walking and so we spent most of the time walking through Berlin and looking at famous places and buildings! At the end of the day I was exhausted and really glad that I could sleep in a couchette on the way back to Vienna! I think I never slept that well
In two weeks time we have Easter holidays. During this time I’m going skiing with my family for the last time of the season. I love to go skiing in April because it’s not cold anymore and you get a really nice tan in your face!
Have you been to the Commonwealth games?
Thank you very much for your Christmas E-Mail!
I hope that you had a fantastic Christmas and a good start in the new year!
I hope every single member of your family is still well!
Lot's of Love to the whole family and the whole Rotary club!
Conny!

Paddy and Mick were both laid off, so they went to the unemployment office.
When asked his occupation, Paddy answered, "Panty Stitcher. I sew da elastic onto ladies cotton panties and tongs."
The clerk looked up panty stitcher on his computer and, finding it classified as unskilled labour, he gave him $80 a week unemployment pay.
Mick was next in and when asked his occupation replied, "Diesel fitter."
Since a diesel fitter was a skilled job, the clerk gave Mick $160 dollars a week.
When Paddy found out he was furious. He stormed back into the office to find out why his friend and co-worker was collecting double his pay.
The Clerk explained, "Panty Stitchers are unskilled labour and Diesel fitters are skilled labour."
"What skill?" yelled Paddy. "I sew da elastic on da panties and tongs, then Mick puts 'em over his head and says:
"Yep, diesel fitter."
