Chairman Deckard began the meeting with a roll call by county.
The members were all sent the minutes from the previous meeting prior to this meeting to review. Bob Brown made a motion to approve the minutes from the April 30, 2007 meeting. Rob Stumpf seconded. All members were in favor.
Bob Brown gave an update to the committee regarding the budget. He stated that he is still waiting to hear from John Buckman regarding some documents that he was supposed to send him. One thing that Mr. Brown needs is the form that the other districts are using to show how much they were charging per hour and per class for their instructors. Bob Brown said that every time he e-mails Mr. Buckman it gets sent back to him. Kathy Dayhoff-Dwyer told Mr. Brown to forward her the e-mail he sent to John Buckman and she would make sure she gets the information from him.
John Hooker III told the committee that he and Chief Tim Deckard went to OwenCounty (District 7) to the open house at the Owen Valley Fire Department May 5. Mr. Hooker stated that he was really impressed that they had different stations such as ventilation, a steel door, auto extrication and a burn chamber. He noted that a lot of the things that they had you could make yourself and it was portable. He added that they took some pictures they will help our district to build pictures off of. They can look at the pictures that were taken and build the props off of them. Kentucky State Fire Institution was the organization that was conducting a lot of the demonstrations. Chief Deckard is supposed to be getting blueprints of the props that they had.
Chief Deckard went over a review of the needs assessments. He handed out a spreadsheet that Jessica Renn did to show all of the certification levels each county has and what the need is for certifications for each county also. He added that he is very disappointed that a lot of the fire departments in the district did not participate. Kathy Dayhoff-Dwyer stated that she would like to know which fire departments from BrownCounty have not given their information. Tim Deckard said that he went to their association meeting and brought them stamped envelopes to mail back and he still did not get any needs assessments back from them.
Bob Brown gave an update on the insurance quote. He stated that Lona Huffman needs just a few names from each county to start on a quote. Chief Deckard handed a sheet of paper around the room for each of the members to list some names that are instructors and how long they have been in the fire service.Kathy Dayhoff-Dwyer stated that she would like to know which fire departments from Brown County have not given their information. Tim Deckard said that he went to their association meeting and brought them stamped envelopes to mail back and he still did not get any needs assessments back from them.
The committee looked over the Adjunct Instructor Application and the changes that Jessica made. It was also decided to have an e-mail address made for the application. The address will be and the e-mails will go to Jessica.Morris Willmert made a motion to accept the application with the changes. Ken Teague seconded. All members were in favor.
The committee then went over the Adjunct Instructor Packet. Tim Deckard wanted to know if the District 8 logo is copyrighted. Valerie Luchauer stated that she paid for that logo. Mr. Deckard added that him, John Hooker and Jessica Renn have discussed having shirts made with the logo on them for fire training. Valerie stated that she will give something in writing that says that it is ok to use the logo. It also needs to be changed for the $25 per hr a day in the packet. Bob Brown made a motion to add in the packet that it is preferred that they wear the district training polo shirt that will be provided to them to instruct. Morris Willmert seconded. All members were in favor.
Chief Deckard stated that at the next meeting it will be time to vote on the fire training plan that Rob Stumpf made a few months back.
He added that there have been several first responder books delivered to Station 9 of Van Buren Township Fire Department, MonroeCounty and he reminded everyone to make sure they check their e-mails. He has 5 or 6 boxes. He is going to take them to Bloomington City Headquarters.
Valerie Luchauer stated that since Jason Lewis does not attend the meetings regularly she is appointing Bob Brown to the committee to replace Mr. Lewis. Bob Brown will now be the representative for the Volunteer Fire Departments in LawrenceCounty.
Mr. Deckard pointed out that according to John Buckman that if they have not received a needs assessment from any certain counties they do not receive anything from the state.
Chief Deckard went over the Indiana Safe Fire Service Initiative with the committee. He would like to have one class in the North and one in the South. He also went over the District 8 Instructor 1 classes that are going to be offered on the internet. He is awaiting the information from IFTA. There will be 20 seats available in the class.
It was mentioned by Kathy Dayhoff-Dwyer that Dan Bates and Shannan Hinton from BartholomewCounty were wondering if the meetings could be moved someone closer like Brownstown. Some discussion was brought up about Lawrence County is central enough and no matter where you go you are going to have people driving long distances to get there. It was mentioned that the committee will listen to Brown County and others who don’t come to the meetings but if they are not going to show up to the meetings there is no sense in moving the meetings when they haven’t even showed up to any. Most of the support that is given to the fire training group is from Lawrence, Orange and MonroeCounties. The meetings have even been moved to the evenings hoping to get more participation because they were being held at 2:00 PM and they still aren’t getting the participation from the other counties. Morris Willmert made a motion to keep the meeting in Bedford with an open mind to change it later on if we get more participation from other counties. Mark Baranko seconded. All members were in favor.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 7:00PM at the Dunn Health Campus.
