Figure S1. Distribution of Staphylinidae biodiversity. Abundance (grey bars) and species richness (white bars), per island and habitat. Whittaker’s species turnover determined as βW= γj/αij–1, where γj is the total diversity for the eight habitats of island j and αij is the common diversity of habitat i with the other habitats of island j. Island discriminated by decreasing geological age in million years (M. yrs) and habitats discriminated by increasing anthropogenic influence for herbaceous (H) and arborescent (A) habitats (underlined). Data based only on taxonomic identifications.

Absolute saturation plots, using the mitochondrial COI gene (1265 bp) nucleotide datasets of the four putative monophyletic groups of Staphylinidae, i.e., Tachyporine, Staphylinine, Oxyteline and Omaliine. Saturation level was estimated for each dataset by computing the slope of the linear regression between two given species (slope=1 indicates no saturation, i.e., the lower the slope the higher the saturation). Percent pairwise number of inferred substitutions (X axis) obtained in PAUP, plotted against the pairwise number of observed differences (Y axis) obtained by corrected pairwise distances using the Akaike information criterion implemented in MrBayes.
