nationbroughttothevergeofmoral,political,andmaterialruin.Corruptiondominatesthe

ballot-box,theLegislatures,theCongress,andtoucheseventheermine[robes]ofthebench.

Thepeoplearedemoralized;mostoftheStateshavebeencompelledtoisolatethevotersatthe

pollingplacestopreventuniversalintimidationandbribery. Thenewspapersarelargely

subsidizedormuzzled,publicopinionsilenced,businessprostrated[crushed],homescovered

withmortgages,laborimpoverished,andthelandconcentratinginthehandsofthecapitalists.

Theurbanworkmenaredeniedtherighttoorganizeforself-protection,importedpauperized
