DISCUSSION SCHEDULE FOR GROUP E

Dosimetry and Effects on Humans

Discussion on Monday 17th:

Conclusions reached:

·  No useful SPE dosimetry data in LEO for Exploration missions

·  No useful EVA dosimetry data Exploration missions.

·  No useful dosimetry Apollo data

·  Very limited neutron spectra.

·  ACE/CRIS/SIS – is this useful for mission planning and prediction?

·  ACE provides useful information for operations; potentially useful for mission planning also.

·  Deep Space Test Bed – useful platform for testing of instruments for Exploration missions.

·  ALARA – too late to perform shielding experiments to affect design of CEV; design already underway; SRAG asked to provide input on shielding (good)..

·  MARIE data may be useful for calculating absorbed dose in Mars orbit.

·  Similar calculations from ACE would not be useful, but intensity spectra could be very useful.

Discussion planned for Tuesday 18th

·  What questions can be posed to allow heliophysics community to inform dosimetry community, and vice-versa?

·  What assets (e.g. ACE) do we need to continue and/or expand to assist the dosimetry community?

·  What aspects of an SPE that the heliophysics community monitors are critical to the dosimetry community?

Other discussion topics to be addressed during the week

·  Given the NASA timeline for CEV what can we do to realistically reduce or minimize risk due to radiation (SPE and GCR)?

·  What measurement data are needed? For Lunar missions? For Mars missions?

·  What instruments are needed?

·  How to incorporate ALARA

·  How to do risk assessment

·  Other
