Chemistry 101 Study Overview

Discussion of the suggested work outline

readings in textbook (The page numbers are for the 11th edition). The textbook is central to this course. All 900 students in Chem 101 have the same midterms and final. To ensure fairness, the questions are nearly exclusively derived from the text and associated assignments. You are responsible for ALL assigned readings even if the material was not covered in lecture.

review lecture notes : This can mean a variety of things depending on your study approach. You can read through them with the textbook and fill in additional information. For every equation make sure you understand all the terms. One approach that is helpful is to rewrite your notes. In some cases you may wish rewrite your notes on flashcards. This allows you avoid spending time on material you already know.

download lecture slides (optional): These are the powerpoint slides projected during lecture. These will have images to illustrate various points, formulae that must be copied accurately or anything drawn on the blackboard that would benefit from a good three dimensional image. These should enhance learning and understanding, but there is nothing in the material that would not be covered elsewhere.

download and review lecture questions: Once a section (ie 6.1-6.4) is completed, the worked problem solutions and iclicker questions from that section will be posted on the A02 webpage.

worked animated problems (Chapter 6, Q 1-5): These are found on the main chem 101 webpage under “Problem Solving”. These are very useful as they are old exam questions. Download the pdf, answer the questions and then check your answer with the animated solution. You can zoom to the end to see if you are correct or watch the entire solution.

Assignments: The assignments are given on this sheet for the 10th and 11th edition. The assignments for the 9th edition can be found on the chem 101 webpage. The assignments listed are the minimum. It is suggested you work through the assignments throughout the text and as many other problems as you can. The problems are not to be handed in for grading. Short answers to the problems with RED numbers are in the back of the textbook. Full solutions to the problems with BLACK numbers are in the solutions manual that is available in the UVic Bookstore.

online quiz Make sure you have a calculator, text, notes and data sheet before you start. There are 40 minutes allocated for each quiz, which should give enough time to complete all questions. For comparison the same questions would be allocated 20 minutes in an exam setting. To use this as prep for the midterm/final try to do the quiz as a closed book test over the first 20 minutes and then check your answers in an open book fashion. It is more important for you to understand the material than to get a perfect score. Treat the quizzes (all quizzes total 7%) as preparation for the exams (57%). Do the quizzes on your own. To do the quizzes with anyone else is academic dishonesty and will lead to poor grades on the exams.
