Reading Counts Pins

All of our current pins will be kept the same this year except, of course, for date changes on Battle of the Books and Caldecott.

Here’s how the RC pin program works:

• Choose a book series or author that you like.
• Read at least 4 books from that series and pass the RC quizzes.
• Once you PASS (60% is the minimum passing score) 4 quizzes for that series, fill out a pin request form (available from your teacher or in the library).
• Put it in the “RC Pin Request Box” in the library – it’s by the couches, above the Zoobooks.
• Mr. Wagner will verify if you did pass 4 books for that series.
• Your pin will be delivered to your classroom, usually within a week. If your pin request is denied, you will be informed why (usually due to not enough quizzes passed yet).

Lanyards and other details:

• If this is your first pin, you will receive a blue lanyard to put your pins on. Please take care of it – we do not give out new ones each year.
• For every 10 pins you collect over your years at Felida, we will give you another lanyard. (It’s difficult to get more than 10 on one lanyard! Some students are on their 4th lanyard already!)
• If you really like a series, read 10 or more books for that series, pass the quizzes, and we will give you a 2nd pin for that series with a “10” on it to mark your achievement. The same goes for 20 books in a series.
• We understand that not all good books are in series, and we don’t want to discourage students from reading ANY book they choose. Because of that, we also have “points pins” to mark students accumulating a high number of points, no matter which books they read. For K-1, pins start at 10 points; only K-2 can get 25 pt pins. Other pins are rewarded for 50, 100, 200, etc. in 100 point increments. Grades 3, 4, and 5 start at the 50 point level.

What if there’s no pin:

There are many book series for which we have quizzes, but not the necessary artwork to create a pin. If you are interested in creating some artwork for a new pin, please submit your drawings to Mr. Wagner. The drawings should be 4” x 4” and colored completely. To create the pins, the drawings are reduced to about 1” square, so it’s best to keep them simple and to not add words. Please do not put the series title on the drawing.
