Echtdampf-Hallentreffen 2016 / 10.12.2015

Discover the unique world of steam models! At the 20th Indoor Steam Engine Meeting in Karlsruhe.

Hissing steam and shiny engines wherever you look at the incomparable highlight of the international live steam scene. The sheer fun of engine driving and talking shop with like-minded steam buffs. Collectors, hobbyists, techies as well asfamilies await the 20th Indoor Steam Engine Meeting from 8th - 10th January 2016 at the Karlsruhe exhibition centre with great anticipation.

Every year it is the diversity of the world's largest indoor event for steam models that makes it such a popular technology extravaganza: Around 700 modellers, guest drivers and clubs will participate in the 20th year of this top event at Messe Karlsruhe. On an exhibition and activity area of 20,000 square metres they present a total of over 1,000 models, all powered by live steam,on rail, road and water.

Showpiece: Traction engines in motion

The earliest cars were of course steam-powered. In keeping with the times they were called locomobiles, mobile locos off the rails so to speak. The first locomobile to be built, in 1769, was actually a steam-driven artillery tractor. It was not until around 100 years later that a steam vehicle was built in series. And after that the race was on: in 1906 Fred Marriott set a world speed record for a steam-driven car in Daytona Beach at 205 km/h.

At that speed, the daily parade of road steam engines and traction engines at the 'Echtdampf-Hallentreffen' would get slightly out of hand. So our journey back in time through the history of steam is more dignified but full of humour. To see the parade of numerous quirky vintage vehicles with their aptly dressed drivers is a unique experience that fascinates spectators every year.

Triumphant: Globetrotters under steam

At the beginning of the 18th century the world's very first steam ship travelledthe Fulda Riverfrom Kassel to Münden. The first patent for a vessel suitable for passenger transport was registered shortly afterwards. And so began the triumphant rise of the steam-powered paddle-steamer,tug boat and passenger steamer! More and more ships were built that were capable of ever-increasing speeds. The steamshipwith the fastest piston steam engine ever used in civil seafaring was the Crown Princess Cecilie built in 1907. The steam required to power the four 46,000 horsepowerpiston engines was supplied by 31 boilers that required 760 tons of coal every day.

The fascination of these ships that were the greatest and fastest in their time still exists today. Right now passionate ship modellers are preparing their models for the iconic meeting of live steam fans! The ships that breasted the waves in bygone days are reproduced as functional models as close as possible to the original vessels, and launched at the show on the 200 m² boat pool. Mutual assistance in repairs, maintenance and group projects is a matter of course for the steam model community. Apart from seagoing models on the water there are plenty of stationary steam ships on display. The model engineers themselves will be glad to answer any questions the visitors may have. If in doubt just pack up your model and bring it along.

Steam fun: Stoom4funfrom the Netherlands

What a show! Stoom4Fun from the Netherlands will be presenting their steam layout at the jubilee steam meeting.Apart from some quite special steam locomotives on their track network there are many more unusual features to be discovered:Alongside the tracks are numerous vintage vehicles such as a Messerschmitt cabin scooter, a Citroen TA and a BMW motorcycle. The landscape comes to life with the addition of a meadow with animals, and there are even special guests such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Plenty of fun for the young (and young at heart) among our visitors!

By the way: Among the exotic models on this Dutch layout are a model of the first ever steam locomotive built in Germany, the Saxonia from the year 1838,and also aforest railway loco made of wood that is fired with burner paste and has an outer firebox.

Growing together: 10 years of Steffenhausen station

Congratulations! At the largest indoor event for steam modelsSteffenhausen station will be on show for the tenth time. Back in 2007 the railway consisted of just a few tracks and two sets of points. But just as the event has grown and improved, so has the station layout. When Steffenhausen station comes to the anniversary event in Karlsruhe it will be with an increase in the number of partaking modellers and in the size of the layout, which meanwhile consists of 6 points and around 70 metres of track. Chapeau!
