Community Advisory Board Meeting 3-7-11

5 pm WTIP Conference Room

In attendance: Jennifer Schulz, Deb LaMusga, Dave Seaton , Thelma Hedstrom, Bill Hansen, Sue Hakes, Deb Benedict

Bill Hansen- facilitated the meeting

Deb B. explained to the board what she would like the outcome of the meeting to be like.

She had sent 2010 reports from Program, News and Development Director and Engineer’s report and the 2011 Operating plane to CAB last week. She had asked for input on news and features, Daybreak, web site and other programming. She asked for honest, forthright feedback on the operations and programming of WTIP.

The group began by stating the WTIP is phenomenal and we are lucky to have this station in our community. WTIP is 99% great in every way.

FEEDBACK

Daybreak –

Love the camaraderie and banter between Roger and Jay

Appreciate the selection of news stories – one member stated that they did not believe WTIP needed to have this type of news program as MPR covers that. However, they now listen to Daybreak faithfully

Likes the coverage Roger gives Grand Portage – very respectful manner

One person was offended by Jay’s accent before the “Fishing Report”. Maybe could be Norwegian instead of Southern

Most appreciated the lighter side of the news that they feature with some stories

to balance hard news

All had feedback on the ability to hear both men’s voices. Some could not understand because of compression(?) issues. Suggested that Roger needs to slow down not mumble and shorten news stories. Jay needs to complete sentences in same tenor. He seems to trail off at the end of some sentences.

A few CAB members listen every day

Web Site

Feedback ranged from strong like to strong dislike

Dark colors on site are not representative of our community

Hard to navigate and find certain items, not intuitive

Do not like flashing items

Photo script flashes too fast

Love the playlists

Love the content

Too many layers

Web Stream

When listening thru I tunes, WTIP first appears and then it changes to named server

AMCC

Need more phonetic pronunciations

Different Hosts music can be jarring, sounds like they are playing their favorite high school music

With lack of available volunteers, why have 2 co-hosts

DJs need to say GRAND Marais, not GRAM Marais

Sidetracks

Loves choice of music by hosts

Love the depth of knowledge of music

Other Programming feedback

All like Gregg McVicker and Undercurrents

All like North Shore Weekend – one expressed loves her music selection

Sports broadcasts are very important

Say score more often

Concern about voices clipping off

Hosts should not rip on other teams and their players

Jazz programmers are great

News

A few people believe we should have WTIP news people covering county, city, EDA meetings and delivering news on such. Have noticed less news stories.

All agree audio from meetings is not good.

First Thursday

Community Conversation is well liked

Good response on having Third Thursday

Feedback that bullying program was not as good as it could have been. Felt that

there was not a good cross section of student body represented. Also understood that it was part of the Youth Project.

We should have a PSA soliciting obituaries
