The Discover Kodiak Board of Directors seeks an Executor Director to guide and lead its destination marketing efforts on behalf of the Kodiak Island Archipelago. The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer and agent for Discover Kodiak and is responsible for marketing strategy, budget development and management of the organization, visitor’s center and two full time employees. This is a highly responsible administrative and managerial position of a professional nature and serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors.
Mission: The purpose of Discover Kodiak shall be to promote sustainable development of the tourism industry throughout the Kodiak Island Borough, thereby increasing economic opportunities, jobs and local tax revenues. Discover Kodiak encourages travel by the public to and through the Kodiak Island Borough and maintains a continuing interest in the well-being of visitors to the area.
Functions/Responsibilities:
- Plans, formulates and recommends for the approval of the Board of Directors such policies, activities, services and programs that further the objectives and goals for the Discover Kodiak and assumes primary responsibility for implementing same.
- Influences local, state, national and international levels of government and the visitor industry to carry out organization goals and objectives; monitors trends and identifies visitor-related issues.
- Enhances Discover Kodiak’s role as a destination marketing organization and change agent.
- Annually proposes a plan of action and regularly reports results to the Board. Makes annual plan adjustments, within budget categories, as needed.
- Develops and presents an annual budget to the Board of Directors and administers the adopted budget for support of Discover Kodiak activities; directs the preparation of all Bureau financial documents and records; and reviews all available grant programs and aggressively pursues programs beneficial to Discover Kodiak activities.
- Maintains effective relationships through personal contact with other organizations, both public and private, whose interests have an impact on the convention and visitor industry and financing; and coordinates Discover Kodiak activities and functions with them.
- Provides field services to individuals and organizations as requested and assists with specific problems.
- Plans, supervises and coordinates all newsletters, publications and other communications.
- Attends all meetings of the Board of Directors and, if requested, assists in the conduct of the meetings.
- Provides accurate and current information to the Board regarding the status of all organization activities and programs and those federal, state and local matters that many influence Bureau activities and programs; and prepares necessary records and reports regarding administrative and managerial activities.
- Hires, trains and supervises a staff to carry out Discover Kodiak’s purpose and goals, and provide for the organization’s day-to-day operation.
- Directs the services of fiscal and legal counsel retained by the Discover Kodiak Board of Directors.
- Executes such contracts or commitments as may be authorized by the bylaws or the Board of Directors and carries out any other duties as assigned.
- Exercises discretionary powers as granted by the bylaws, the Board of Directors, and custom.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
Experience in the Alaska visitor industry, tourism marketing, association management, and publication development; a track record of progressively responsible experience in the visitor industry, a Bachelors degree or equivalent professional experience, possess a comprehensive knowledge of destination marketing issues, and have the ability to work with the Board of Directors, City and Borough officials, Discover Kodiak members, and business and community leaders.
Decision-making responsibilities/authority:
Works independently with broad latitude to implement the goals of the Discover Kodiak. Reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for implementing policies established by the Board. Makes recommendations and develops policies for Board consideration and approval. Represents the organization to the media, general public and local elected officials.
Supervisory Authority:
Supervises all organization staff directly or indirectly.
External Visibility/Contact:
Frequent contact with the general public, government officials, Discover Kodiak members and other business owners and executives, requiring a well-developed sense of tact, courtesy and diplomacy.
Working Conditions:
General day-to-day activity in an office environment, with some activity required offsite in a variety of public settings.
COMPENSATION/BENEFITS: Salary $50,000-60,000 DOE. Retirement benefits.
