Cookery is taught as part of our Skills Programme, contributing to externally recognised qualifications e.g. ASDAN. The School’s cookery programme is currently designed to introduce students aged 11 – 18 years, to food hygiene, food safety, basic cooking techniques, and a range multi-cultural range of recipes that aims to develop student independence for life beyond Great Oaks Small School.

The Cookery room is not purpose built but equips students to function within a country style kitchen, giving them opportunities to carry out their skills within a natural ‘home’ environment.

Job Purpose

To develop and deliver a discrete curricular that dovetails within our skills department to ensure high standards of teaching and learning and the well-being of staff and students.

To promote the personal development of students thus promoting independent living skills.

Key Tasks

To ensure that students have a positive and enjoyable experience of cookery which encourages them to develop their skills and interests further.

To understand the responsibility required under the SEN Code of Practice and to seek advice from SEN Coordinator when appropriate.

To make appropriate use of the School’s rewards and sanctions procedures in line with the School’s behaviourpolicy.

To ensure the consistent implementation and improvement of schemes of work which encapsulate key learning strategies.

To create a subject improvement plan which contributes positively to the achievement of the school improvement plan.

To oversee and evaluate the subject budget allocation to ensure the budget is spent in line with subject learning priorities and best value principles.

To ensure the consistent implementation and compliance withcurrent Health and Safety legislative requirements.

To ensure that volunteers and other staff working to support the delivery of cookery understand their roles clearly and are supported in making an effective contribution.

To promote the positive values, attitudes and behaviour expected from all students by treating them with respect and consideration.

To communicate promptly and sensitively with parents, carers and other relevant bodies where necessary.

To be aware of,and work within, the statutoryframeworks relating to teachers’ responsibilities, including Safeguarding.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

Relevant professional or vocational qualification or substantial experience of working with children/adolescence/adults with ASD and SLCN.

Experience of delivering an accredited course or programme of study.

Experience of teaching cookery classes.

Ability to work as part of a team.

The ability to work flexibly under pressure.

Knowledge and understanding of Equal Opportunities and Diversity and an ability to ensure that the School’s policies are implemented through every day practices.

Evidence of clear and effective communication skills.

High level of computer literacy, in particular Microsoft Office and use of email and internet.

Appropriate levels of numeracy, language and literacy at a standard required for the role.

Desirable

Qualification in Food Hygiene.
