The Truro Dental Educational Facility is based on the site of The Royal Cornwall Hospital. This can be accessed from the A390 and has regular bus services from the surrounding area. Busses will stop at The Trelawney Wing of the hospital and there is a park and ride service from Langarth which stops outside the Dental facility.

There are two disabled parking bays directly outside the main doors of the facility (6m from front door). There are no kerbs, stairs or incline to the doors from the bays. There is no charge for blue badge holders however you must inform reception who will give you a card to display on your vehicle.

There is also a main car park behind the building which is level tarmac however accessing the main doors from here does require ascending a slight gradient, this is also tarmac. There is a fee to park in this car park.

There is adequate space for patients to be dropped off at the main entrance.

There are two automatic doors at the main entrance with no steps or kerbs. Door opening is approximately 125cm for both doors.

The building is well lit throughout with large windows and adequate lighting. Immediately on entering the main building there is access to all floors via a lift to the left. Reception is to your right. No background music is played in the facility.

Reception is always manned on clinic days and reception team will support with any additional needs. The desk is 108cm at tallest point however there are lower areas to support wheelchair users. An induction loop system is available at the desk. Hearing aids should be turned to T position to use.

The flooring is tiled, smooth and level throughout the reception area.

There are two waiting areas in the facility. The ground floor waiting area has 21 chairs arranged in banks of 3. These start approximately 2m from the reception desk. All tables are low and the layout is spacious and has enough room to manoeuvre a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

There is also a waiting area on the lower ground floor, accessible via the lift or stairs. This has 24 chairs arranged in banks of 3 or 6, low tables and again is has enough space to manoeuvre a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

Both seating areas have smooth and level flooring, have a children’s play area with children’s chairs and drinking water is available.

Patients will be called individually from the waiting area by student, nurse or Dentist.

All waiting areas have clear signage guiding patients where facilities can be located.

Treatment areas can be accessed directly from the waiting area through doors approximately 90cm aperture. These are arranged in 4 bays with 8 chairs in each bay. The flooring is level and smooth. There is also individual consultation room on both floors.

X ray rooms can be accessed by wheelchair users

Wheelchair platform and recliner is available so that wheelchair users can remain in their chair

The lift is located immediately to the left on entering the lobby doors. The door width is approximately 90cm. It is well lit, with buttons approximately 1m from the floor, within the reach of wheelchair users. There is an audible announcement of direction and when floor is reached. There is no braille or floor markings.

Male, female and disabled toilets are available on each floor. These are all easily accessible with no ramps or stairs. Baby change facilities are available in all male and female toilets.

Emergency call points are available on stairs

Patient letters can be made available in other formats such as large print (on request at reception)

All reception staff havedisability awareness training

BSL interpreters can be provided with appropriate notice

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome in all dental education facilities. Dogs can remain with their owner in the waiting area. When called into clinic, assistance dogs can be left with the reception staff while treatment takes place where they will be looked after by a member of staff in a quiet area away from patients.

A nurse or member of reception team will support and guide the patient into the treatment bay and will remain with them throughout treatment and guide back to reception on completion.
